I Received Corporal Punishment At School

In my case, mainly in the form of face slaps – of which I got my share! - and one meeting with the cane
The face slappings were a paradox, in fact, as face slapping was prohibited in Danish schools even from 1814!
In Denmark, there is a bit of general confusion about when corporal punishment in the school system was actually abolished.
For instance, many people think that the cane was abandoned in 1952.
This was only the case in Copenhagen, though. In the rest of the country, the cane was not forbidden until 1967.
It was not used much in the early 60ties, when I started in school, however – at least not in public schools in the cities. Maybe, it was different in the rural areas, especially in Jutland - and in the catholic school, where I went, and where the cane was in used until its very abolition in 1967.
However, it also took place in public schools.
The mother of a female friend of mine was a teacher in a public school in Aalborg, Denmark´s fourth largest city, and according to my friend, her mother caned three 11-year-old boys in 1959, but that is the latest account, I have about caning in public schools.
It was different in private schools. At least in some of them.
My sister and I attended the catholic school I mentioned in a relatively large provincial town.
Not because any of our parents was a catholic, but simply because our parents had an idea, that we would get a better education in a private school, where they paid for our teaching!
I shall not say if I learned more than my friends who attended public schools, but at least, I learned to fight!
I had to, as I was bullied for attending a “finer” school than my friends in the neighbourhood and in the football team! The was only one way to stop that bullying – by being the strongest and the one who hit hardest, so that was what I became!
One difference between public schools and this catholic school was the fact, that the cane was still in use and remained to be so until the very end in 1967.
My sister started in school in 1960, and I started in 1963. Neither of us was ever caned, but we heard of a few incidents.
They were not frequent, but a caning did take place now and then.
If a pupil was sentenced to a caning, the punishment was carried out after the last lesson of the day in a room called Studio O.
It was a room on the ground floor of the school building. Actually a class room, which was no longer used as such, but for keeping stuffed animals for biology and other stuff that was not used in teaching every day.
And this was also the room, where the cane was kept.
The room had windows to the school yard, so when a pupil was going to be caned, the curtains would always be drawn.
At least at that point, everyone knew what was going to happen. Usually the rumour had spread all over the school in advance, though.
The curiousity among us children was huge, of course, and even though our school day had usually ended, when a caning was going to be administered, it could be hard for the teachers to get us out of the school yard!
In my case, my curiousity lasted, until I had my own meeting with the cane!
If a boy was going to be caned – the majority of the cases – the caning was carried out by the boys´ male p.e. teacher.
If the culprit as a girl, the cane was wielded by the head mistress, one out of four nuns among the teachers.
The standard punishment was three strokes. I have never of anyone who got more.
During the four years from I started in that school till the cane was finally abolished, I knew of four canings, apart from my own – three boys and one girl. I also heard unconfirmed rumours about one boy more. My sister knew of two more boys and one girl who were caned before I started in the school.

A close female friend of mine attended a private Christian school in the North-west of England where Corporal Punishment was still administered in 1989 - the cane for boys and the slipper for girls. A report by The Independent newspaper in the early/mid 1990s confirmed that corporal punishment was still in use that late.

Ah, such memories. The cane was used in the Catholic school I attended in London from 1968 to 1975. Not excessively but slightly more than in your school. And all teachers had their own implements for in class misbehaviour!
