I Love Photography

Kumbaya, i'm sorry that you saw my compliments as backhanded. that wasn't my intent. i'm a professional photographer, that doesn't mean that i think my work is better than yours. the two don't compare because my work is of a very different genre.

i spend many of my days with other creative professionals. we look at (or listen to as the case may be) each others work and we talk about it. sometimes we get it and sometimes what we say is a load of crap.

when i looked at your piece, i made the seemingly fatal mistake of talking to you as i would the other creative people that i talk to. all i accomplished was to piss you off.

You're looking at items in a room in Shakespeare's childhood home in Stratford Upon Avon.

Your compliment was a bit back-handed. I'm not in a battle. I'm a pacifist. But I'm growing weary of having to correct you. Or would it have been better to simply allow you to continue under the misapprehension that those shadows were falling to the left? I've probably forgotten more than you'll ever know about photography, especially my own. Now run along because despite humming Kumbaya to myself you're beginning to piss me off.

that's really, really good. the lighting has a "Dutch Masters" quality to it
Kumbayakid · 61-69, M
I was a professional photographer for seven years. I've known very good ones and very bad ones. "Professional" and "quality" hardly go hand in hand.

And you continue to patronize. Quite a gift for that you have, and ironic given your continued reluctance to admit that your observation was wrong. I'd love to see your work. Maybe we can discuss ambient versus available lighting over a pint. That should be interesting...

yeees. of course. but it isn't just about the ambient (or should i say, available) light. clearly you've used another light source. your shadows are going from right to left and not from the left which is where the window is. also, you've got highlights at the front of your objects.

anyway, it's a good photo
Kumbayakid · 61-69, M
I honestly don't know
Kumbayakid · 61-69, M
Room. I never said there wasn't another source of light. But you're wrong about the direction of the primary light source. The primary source was from the left side. I was there. I know. And if you observed the picture carefully it would be obvious to you. Maybe...
room101 · 51-55, M
so there was another source of light. and the light from the window behind you was your main source. what i'm even more impressed with is that this was a "grab shot" and not something that you set up yourself.
Kumbayakid · 61-69, M
I'm afraid you're wrong. The shadows you see to the left of the toys were made by the curtains. The window to the left (and perhaps another window behind me) were the only sources of light.

Well isn't that wonderful?!? Any idea what game those things are from? At least they look like they'd be for a game.
Kumbayakid · 61-69, M
Like all of those very evident highlights on the bottom right two-thirds of the ball that we might otherwise call a shadow?
Kumbayakid · 61-69, M
Well, the Dutch Masters and I have at least one thing in common. We both use ambient light. 🙂
JustNik · 51-55, F
It's a lovely picture! Now, if you don't mind, may I ask what I'm looking at?
room101 · 51-55, M
clearly i'm confused by all of the very evident highlights on every object.
room101 · 51-55, M
i give up mate. continue humming Kumbaya to oblivion
room101 · 51-55, M
Jesus Christ! how did a compliment turn into a blooming battle
room101 · 51-55, M
i think that the game was a precursor to pub skittles
Kumbayakid · 61-69, M
I agree, you're confused. But it's okay.
JustNik · 51-55, F
Ah there's fun in the wondering, too. Thanks kumba! 👍
