"Diode" refers to its electrical structure, not its material.
Might the change have been that of the introduction of different materials for the same purpose, so using "diode" is generic?

That wouldn't surprise me,despite them being called that for some time before the sudden name change.

I think because the Polymer became a Diode, perhaps not organic..

Interesting. That could have been because OLEDs were cheaper than PLEDs and did the same thing.
