I am Vegan

I've been vegan for twelve years and if anyone asks me the reason I politely explain my views to them. Society generally tends to condemn bullying and emotional abuse, but if the subject happens to be vegan, there is suddenly an unofficial free pass floating in the air for anyone who wants to take it. I have had someone thrust a piece of bacon in my face and yell, 'go on, you know you want some!' I don't. If I wanted to eat it, I would. Having someone trying to make you a spectacle and feel like shit in front of others simply because they don't agree with your personal choices in life is pathetic. If you are vegan who had to deal with this then you are obviously not alone. I feel strongly that one day, if not in my lifetime, the world will find itself a much kinder place than it was, and it will only start when fools realise that other fellow human beings are not here to be bullied either physically or emotionally, and that animals aren't either.

I agree with you, completely. I also feel that I don't deserve to be bullied because I do eat bacon, but it happens; especially on the internet. Mention having steak for dinner and I can be quite certain that someone will call me a murderer. One woman sent me a picture of slaughtered cattle. I'm sorry that you have been abused by ignorance. I hope that people will stop. I think it's could be because omnivores feel accused when vegans tell their reasons for being vegan. I don't. I just figure, that there must be an awful lot of vegans who don't have pets. And that's too bad. Having a dog or cat in your life is comforting.

@asmallstone: I hope he wasn't/isn't a friend. When I was quitting smoking, I had an acquaintance who took great pleasure in blowing smoke at me, and offering his pack. In the end, I was grateful to him, because the more he pushed, the angrier I got. And I wouldn't give him the satisfaction. He wasn't my friend, but the friend of a friend.

Some people can be rude and stupid with it. Back in the 1960s, when I was a young married woman, we had friends, a married couple, who were vegan. We ate at their place, and when we did, we ate vegan. When we invited them to our place, they ate what we ate, except for the meat and by products. I was careful to not use butter for frying the vegetables, and they didn't eat anything that we were unsure of being actually vegan food. Back then, it wasn't a huge THING. vegans were vegans by choice, vegetarians were vegetarians by choice, and omnivores also made their choices.

@Serenitree: No he wasn't a friend he was work colleague. But there are many choices for vegetarians and vegans alike and this is a good thing. I don't believe that being vegan or veggie makes you a better person because it's in our genes as to who we are, and someone once, rather over excitedly, told me that Hitler was vegetarian. I was a meat eater and I know how good it tastes and how hard it can be to change eating habits, but now that I have I won't be going back for anyone, please or offend. People need more tolerance towards others but at least some of us are trying to be! ☺

@asmallstone: I actually admire people who make a choice to go vegan or vegetarian, learn how to do it properly, (unlike what I did when my kids were teens) and then stick to it. No matter what choices one makes, if they have the conviction of their beliefs, they are to be commended. I know a woman who was Anglican and her favourite weekend treat was a cheese burger with fries. And she loved pepperoni pizza. She married a Jew. Became a Jew. And never ate either of her two favourite things again. She loved him more than treats. I admire her a great deal.

plants have been shown to react to music and emotion they make you feel better when you are sad they provide us nutrients, they help one another and they feel pain, they tell us when they are suffering, which is why i count all humans animals plants and insects as equal in the eyes of the universe and are all okay to eat. and one day when i die i hope to be dined upon by animals and plants as i have so enjoyed dining on them.
xSharp · 31-35, M
@asmallstone: that seemed mildly sarcastic.. do you not respect my beliefs? even so i still respect yours, even though plants are just as alive and aware as animals.
Originalme · 26-30, F
@xSharp: But you do realize that you are actually consuming more plants than your average vegan? Those animals you eat don't live off of air, they eat plants (or should I say kill ?) So when eating meat you are also agreeing that all the plants' lives that have been taken are justified. I mean sure I hear cabbage screaming every time I chop its part but that's the circle of life, eh? Do you see how ridiculous this argument sounds? There is a sentience hierarchy and you can't compare eating cucumbers with eating a dead animal. I don't care whether you are vegan or not but I just can't help but respond to this ridiculous argument. *Plants do not feel pain* they don't have the mechanism for feeling pain. They can respond to stimuli but they *do not feel pain*. Once again I don't care if you are vegan or not but don't use that argument, it makes no sense.

@Originalme: vegans are taking part in genocide by choosing only to kill poor defenseless plants 😔 eat some sharp clawed or horned animals too or be evil unhealthy scum forever especially cows they kill so much grass that they deserve to be eaten twice as much!.. besides i also eat carnivorous predators like pickerel :D .. and yes plants DO feel pain, look it up. defending vegan-ism is like defending smoking, it is unhealthy immoral and it kills the helpless people who cant stop because they just feel soooo damn coool doing it. 😕

I have seen both sides (vegans and carnavores) attacking and it's not pretty either way. It is rude and stupid to put someone on the defensive over their choice of food. Since I live on the west coast in California, I have seen more vegans verbally attack meat eaters than the other way around. But I have also seen meat eaters verbally attacking vegans and vegetarians. Self righteousness about dietary choices is absolutely obnoxious.
Serenitree · F
You are so right. Self righteousness is generally pretty obnoxious. People who think theirs is the only way, are often rude to anyone who isn't like them. It seems to be something that runs through all factions through the world.

i wouldn't bully you. i have many vegetarian and vegan friends and family i serve food for at our many social gatherings. what i would do is simply serve you some of the vegan sorbetto gelato i make at my business. and then you would fall madly in love with me😀
asmallstone · 36-40, F
@innocentfun4u: OMG I worship at the alter of Chocolate -
Anopenheart · 51-55, M
@asmallstone: and chocloate sorbetto is rare because most of the time it has milk
asmallstone · 36-40, F
Cadbury's Bournville dark is a favourite of mine and there are plenty of dairy free chocolate around to buy - I'm pleased to say!
I agree. Not everybody is like that though. and let's not pretend there aren't vegans out there that are just as horrible to nonvegans.
asmallstone · 36-40, F
I wouldn't pretend there wasn't. But each to their own when it comes to choices in food and no one should be slighted for it.

I am not a vegetarian. I eat fish, milk products and eggs.

The reason why I don't eat meat, and I have not for the past 40 years, is that the meat industry is the largest producer of pollution, directly and indirectly, with the biggest negative impact on the environment. In addition, I have red meat allergies.

I've gotten the lecture, often, from people who feel sorry for me, and how good meat tastes. I've also heard: liberal, communist, elitist, etc.
What's your favorite vegan meals?
asmallstone · 36-40, F
Butternut squash risotto, chana masala, linguine with mushrooms. There are plenty of meatless recipes and products to buy. I use soya mince to make chilli and lasagna.
That sounds so good!
