I Love Films

Who else loves Beyond the Valley of the Dolls and who is your favorite character?
This film feels like student film project. But it is an insane and wild trip, which I guess kind of works against the backdrop of 1960s rock and debauchery and acid trips.

I found Kelly adorable, but she is shallow and selfish and completely random. I would not seek her out.

Casey is very attractive to me. I found her fairly intelligent and much deeper emotionally than the other characters (that may not be saying much though :) ). I hate that she dies at the end (yes folks...SPOILER...sorry).

Z-Man was so ridiculous that I almost thought I was watching Rocky Horror Picture Show for a while.

Pet was nice, but too predictable, and her constant pot smoking seemed to depart from everything else about her character. It was nice that at least one person in this movie had something that resembled a real relationship though.

@pone22 How could they? BVD was made 6 years before Rocky Horror and was written and directed by different people. Though both films share camp nature, BVD was more about satirizing preachy nature of The Valley of The Dolls while Rocky Horror is about embracing sexuality, no matter how bizarre. That being said, Rocky Horror came out when it was supposed to.

And about Z-man, he has his creepy moments but with good reason. He was modeled after Phil Spector who was know for being violent, abusive, and later actually killed a woman in his own house by shooting her in the mouth (this incident happened years after BVD was released...life imitating art?). So whether the writer and director meant for that Z-man to be that creepy or not, the character was bound to have that same level of creepiness.

You wanna know something creepy? The woman who was killed by Phil Spector was an actress who starred in the Deathstalker movie series...John Lazar (the guy who played Z-man) also starred in that series in the 80s. Just a weird connection I made after some digging.

Yeah, I like both films. It's difficult to pick a favourite character but Ashley kind of sticks in my mind. Not sure what that says about me.
I think they could have turned BVD into Rocky Horror. Doing Z-Man as a really corny trans narrator would have worked. They already had it going in that direction, but they didn't take it all the way. The way they did it, instead of being campy and funny, Z-Man was just creepy. He had the vibe of a serial killer clown. 👺

My favorites are Z-man and Pet.

@Pone22 I totally get what you mean. Casey was another favorite. Remember her silhouette in the that black lace robe? Heaven.

I love that you brought up Rocky Horror. I feel like BVD is one of the predecessors that had to be made to pave way for Rocky Horror.
