30 from the 3 Criterion mega sets for June

BERGMAN

1. The Virgin Spring - June 2 - of all his classics i saw before getting this set, this film moved up the most in my estimation, it is just a darn good well crafted story, inspired Wes Craven's movie i've never seen before, gorgeous, luminous, medieval, and compelling. Before i thought of it as Ingmar just doing what he did with previous period pieces all over again, and the fact that he got an Oscar for it furthered my prejudice in my then virulent anti-western warped way of thinking. Now it is a firm top tenner imo.

VARDA

2. La Pointe Courte - in this month of June here i want to cover Agnés' principal feature films chronologically, this is her debut, stylized after Italian neo-realism, a new and vibrant voice emerges with prior experience in photography. To know her is to love her. About a fishing village and a couple, she also drew from a Faulkner novel for the storytelling of 2 seperate things. It was poorly distributed, thus causing her to make short films, each delightful btw.

3. Cleo from 5 to 7 - her most popular film is an assured masterpiece, using real time, in a tale of a singer lady who's anxious about a medical test result. Has a short silent film in it starring Godard and Karina, and a cameo by Michel Legrand, amongst others.

4. Le bonheur - one of the most beautiful visually i've ever seen, with a lovely Mozart soundtrack. The film is beguiling and sneaks up at ya to challenge yer. I'd say it is one of Agnès' most daring works, and also most important. Fassbinder liked it too.

5. Les creatures - with Catherine Deneuve and Michel Piccoli, the first so far that wouldn't qualify as a great film. It explores further what Varda is all about, in the realm of feminism, here a couple, the wife goes silent after a car accident, and the husband is all bossy, and fights off people with a ... well you'll see when you see this underseen film.

You hadn't seen "Last House on the Left"? It's nasty though possibly even nastier than the version I've seen because I'm not sure the fully uncut version was ever released in the UK.

@PhilDeep One of these days, i'd wanna also find a copy of the original I Spit on Your Grave. .... I saw Wes' The Hills Have Eyes though!

@SW-User I've never seen the full "I Spit on Your Grave" either. Apparently it has some pretty grotesque shots during a rape scene. The remake was a more polished film but was also cut for similar reasons. I think the cut parts might just take me over the edge and want to throw-up, frankly. Probably the most realistic and unwatchable such scene would be in "Irreversible" which I would say is traumatising even to watch :(

@PhilDeep Yes Irreversible, brutal scene!
