How slow do you like your films?

I've always liked slow cinema, but now more than ever, as i inundate my senses with a Turkish director, i shall take this opportunity to mention and thereby honor some of the notable slow films i've seen

GERTRUDE - Carl Dreyer's last film is totally made up of long extended takes, an austere masterpiece

DAMNATION - Bela Tarr is known for his slowness, this one started his noteworthy style and is my favorite of his, others will prefer Satantango and Werckmeister Harmonies more though, i like the tale in this one, good to watch around Valentines Day

THAT OBSCURE OBJECT OF DESIRE - Luis Bunuel, for his last few films reached a serene plateau of artistic mastery, and in this his final film, his Appolinian ease is evident.

NOBODY KNOWS - Hirokazu Kore-eda's films are all divine works of gentle slowness, and this is a great one amongst them, a very touching and sad tale too of kids left alone to their own devices.

OUT 1 - Jacques Rivette is another master of the slow, Out 1 is not just slow however but a maddening experience as you slowly immerse yourself in it's highly literate Balzacian story.

THE SACRIFICE - Andrei Tarkovsky, belongs here too, any of his films does the slow trick perfectly. In this like Gertrude, all the scenes are long takes.

THE CHRONICLE OF ANNA MAGDALENA BACH - The only Jean Marie Straub film i have this is static bliss with a score made up entirely of JS Bach music, this is where films go when they die.

REVENGE - A recently seen film, of the Kazakh New Wave, it is otherworldly in it's slowness, very weird and wonderful.

Now back to Three Monkeys, leave a comment below about the slow films you like :)
