Audition (1999) & I Don't Feel at Home in this World Anymore (2017)

Welcome y'all to my inaugural post about the films i watch, i think it would be good to devote each post to 2 films each, thus encouraging comparative thoughts and the notion of those double features the elderly here will feel nostalgic about.

Also this gives me a chance to write about things in general, as film encompasses a wide variety of things (Life), so it seems to me appropriate to use film as a springboard for a similarly wide variety of content.

For the last few weeks i've been seeing films on a nice 50 inch, but here i am making some use of the streaming platforms i pay for, it would be wasteful to pay for that which goes unused.

AUDITION - Takashi Miike's most popular hit, seen on the Arrow Player. I loved it, it starts off beguilingly sedate, normal, run of the mill, Miike lulls you into a false sense of security, and gradually puts an element here and there as foreboding foreshadows to the final act. I can't believe it has taken this long to see this, but it was worth the wait. Recent purchases included 2 Miike trilogies, so i'm all of a sudden keen on seeing more of his prolific career which i understand isn't the most consistent filmography out there. Also tying into a focus on modern Japanese cinema (from 80's to present), Miike is an exhilerating talent, i first heard about him on another site where i announced quite naively that i was getting into Gaspar Noe (this must have been around 2011) and a fellow extreme cinema fan shared about Japan's enfants terribles, since then and before a week ago i had only seen Ichi the Killer and Imprint, the banned episode of the Masters of Horror series. About a year or 2 ago got into Sion Sono, another Japanese provocateur, and i remember being all gung ho about choosing him over Takashi, but now i see that i was so dumb, isn't it true for some at least that one is most dumb when they think they're being so smart and perceptive? Audition's finale without spoiling it for those who've yet to see it taught me something about pain, with pain we know ourselves better. A little lesson wrapped up for those who grin and bear it.

I DON'T FEEL AT HOME IN THIS WORLD ANYMORE - Wow, what a title, i've felt this way since many moons ago. Still in the process of watching it on Netflix, and am digging it, but the plot feels unnecessary, i think it would have been better if it's trajectory was at the basic way things are, a scathing indictment on the modern malaise, but no, it's about some thief and maybe an organisation he belongs to. The 2 leads are enjoyable, including Elijah Wood, surprising for me, i might have to check out his performance in the re-make of the horror classic Maniac. Funny, poignant, and dead pan. Working out to be one of the best things i've seen on Netflix.

Until next time, have fun, a relative had a saying, they said it in German, but i'll give the translation here.
