I Love Films

One great auteur i never tire of heralding is Werner Schroeter, i cannot put into words why, for one needs to see it to believe it, i can however point to what i think is most important, and i shall do that now before hitting the hay. My appreciation of Herr Schroeter, dark lord of the new German cinema ....:)

The beginning of his career is just what fascinates me most, you get my top 3 right here

The Death of Maria Malibran - i could watch this for an infinity of times, there is so much to love, most of all is 2 things, the visuals, and the sound design. Storywise it is basically a variation on a theme of dying, featuring the opera diva aspect.

Eika Katappa - Werner's first feature film, very dazzling, has some dull moments however, he had to start somewhere. Variations on death is yet again a way to describe it narratively, it's a sensorial thing.

Der bomberpilot - a tale of 3 ladies performing in the 3rd Reich, as with the above, the value is not with the story but with sound and sight, the basic elements of film. The ending is to die for, all that i treasure most in Schroeter comes together in that mish mash of song and dance.

There's plenty i've not seen yet from Werner, he is so underappreciated it's a marvel the 3 above are available at all.

And there are some others i do own but are marred by telling a story too much, the only other film i feel inclined to single out with unlimited praise is Malina, a film that upon first viewing made a crushing impact, seeing it again however takes away that for me, but it remains a very depressing thing and stays difficult because of that, but when it gels for the first time, it is so special it make your head spin.
