I Am An Atheist

I am a proud atheist and an ex Christian and ex Mormon.
Also my lack of belief in a god has nothing to do with the theory of evolution. Christians just cannot seem to accept this fact. When I first became an atheist I didn’t even know anything about the theory of evolution. I have learned about it since then because they keep forcing me to defend it. I am not the best qualified person to defend it but some of them just can’t seem to accept this fact.
Also I do not hate god. How can I hate something I don’t believe in.
The reason I’m an atheist is because I visited atheist websites and finally listened to them with an open mind. I also listened to apologists with an open mind. I learned to much about the Bible and the history of Mormonism.
Happygurl · 46-50, F
I'm terribly confused about God and his existence or lack thereof
@Happygurl was there a few years ago myself. Even now it would be nice if there was a... Something out there that cared for the Earth. But I was desperate so it was easy to mislead me before. I am much harder to convince now. I still like religion as a subject and I think spirituality has benefits. But the rules, dogma and mythology does nothing for me. So I've you ever need to talk I'll listen.
Bandit2398 · 51-55, M
I had 4 different Christians comment on this thread. I was respectful to them. All I did was ask questions or point out the obvious flaws in their reasoning. Instead of giving me a rebuttal they just deleted their comments. One guy refused to answer my questions because he said I had ulterior motives. I feel terrible for these people that they can’t listen and consider a position that disagrees with them. I feel bad for them that they are incapable of considering they could be wrong about their deeply held beliefs. Christianity is nothing more than a mind virus.
@Carazaa
They can NOT!

In my view they can and i laid out the reasons i think that.
Please treat me fairly, carazaa. These are not excuses i make to dismiss god. These are carefully thought out counter arguments which i have arrived at through contemplation and study. I am just as interested in what is true as you are even if we have not arrived at the same conclusion.

My conclusion is that the sort of things that people use as evidence for god, the sort of things you mentioned are not evidence of god.
I think the impulse to attribute them to a god is a result of the fact that we find these things to be pleasurable and meaningful.

You don't like my conclusions and so you dismiss them wholesale without being able to actually explain where my reasoning is in error.
Carazaa · F
You have not treated me fairly and you want me to treat you fairly? That is typical of all you atheists.

A sunset is not "Patterns" it is the atmosphere and the world we live in trees, ocean, stars at night, the sun in the morning that warms us, perfect temperatures so we don't die. That is put there by God who loves us. If there was just a few degrees off we die a slow death. This beautiful blue ball of ours is spinning thousands of miles per minute so we can live! This loving God made it just right for us, and He even came to visit us so we can have a relationship with him. We are told to tell people and all we get is grief for that.
@Carazaa
You have not treated me fairly
I'm sorry you feel that way. How do you feel i've treated you unfairly? Or do you just mean that i have disagreed with you and you feel that, that is unfair?
That is typical of all you atheists.
Carazaa? When you feel yourself about to make a statement which reads "This is just like ALL YOU _____", consider stopping yourself.
Blanket statements about an entire group are not a good direction to go in, generally speaking.
A sunset is not "Patterns"
I don't think appreciation of a sunrise is in itself evolutionairly adaptive. I think that it is part of the pattern-oriented aesthetic appreciation which IS adaptive for the reasons i mentioned previously.

As for the sun keeping us warm or the earth being what it is, can you show me that it was made for us and not that we simply adapted to live under these conditions? After all, the temperature variation on earth is vast from desert to icecaps and life exists everywhere.
Was the hole made just right for the puddle or did the puddle fill the hole?
We are told to tell people and all we get is grief for that.
I'm not giving you grief, i don't think. I'm disagreeing with you.
Should i consider you to be giving me grief on the basis that you are not accepting my naturalistic explanations?

It just seems every newly minted atheist seems to feel the need to shout out how proud he/she is of losing faith. We get it... you have suddenly become filled with new knowledge after being released from the mind you blame God for keeping closed... when you did believe in him, that is.

What is remarkable to me though is that now that you don't believe in God you still seem to blame him (religion) for your closed mind. If you are really proud of being an atheist then take the accountability necessary to admit it was YOU that kept your mind closed. You might also find that's the real reason you lost your faith in the first place. And, maybe that's not something to be so proud about.
JBird · F
@Bandit2398 from what I understood there are two types of people in Christianity. One uses them to help themselves over their emotional issues and to get a hope. They don't look over the logics when they just need help. Others use religion to promote their hate and insecurity. Those are the ones you have to watch out for.

Similarly in atheism, some people use their choice to bully people and to make themselves look good. I have seen one here.
Bandit2398 · 51-55, M
I think you’re right but not just in atheism and religions. I think everyone fallls
In the two categories you described. @JBird
Carazaa · F
@MarkPaul Yes being proud is not so good. It is better to be humble and love God, true 🌻
I suggest you give up your atheism, and worship the POWERFUL Flying Spaghetti Monster. Bask in Apotheosis! l mean APASTA-OSIS!

I had no idea this post would get so many comments. But I want to thank everyone for their comments especially those who disagree with me. I welcome all comments.
I do wish we wouldn’t be rude to each other though. I think there is a time and place for sarcasm. I think it’s good to talk about the Flying Spaghetti Monster too because people can see the bad arguments they make can also be applied to it also. But being rude to people who disagree with us will just cause them to not listen. Like I said I was a Christian and for a very short time a Mormon so I understand how hard it is to realize these religions are not true.
Carazaa · F
@Ynotisay I did not write that for me. I have written that many times and that is what I will do until I die because I care about people, even if they are so mean. I wont block you unless you keep harassing me with more hate so if you don't like to listen to God's warnings I suggest you block me.
Ynotisay · M
@Carazaa Then I'll block you. I don't listen to fables intended to control people and make money. Particularly when the result is hate.
Speedyman · 70-79, M
Why I don’t listen to atheism@Ynotisay
Speedyman · 70-79, M
Visiting atheist websites is guaranteed to lower your understanding of anything. Their net understanding of anything is usually zero. You are of course correct about being a proud atheist as atheism is built on human pride
Bushranger · 70-79, M
@Speedyman Ah, so you still want to participate in name calling, then. But, as with the name calling, I'll stop the pointless conversations with you, if you agree to do the same.
Speedyman · 70-79, M
Fine. @Bushranger
Bushranger · 70-79, M
@Speedyman OK, so what would you like to discuss?
It’s a bold step you made..and a lonely road you chose. People don’t want to deal with the truth..

It’s all about the reassuring lie for many..

Life isn’t easy...no one owes you anything here...
If there was a creator, what a huge assumption we make that he cares about a virus..(humanity) on an insignificant dot of a planet ..
I caught in the innuendo 😅😀😂

You must be right...given that I borrowed the idea from John Locke...

I will give you time to look him up

..second reminder, you are off subject..

When you have something other than one offs and judgements..

I will be here..

Go pray about your disrespectful tone to others here.
@Speedyman
Bandit2398 · 51-55, M
@Texasgurl I understand he has been disrespectful to people but I really feel for him. It’s hard to accept that your religion is a lie. Especially when you devote so much of your life to it. For an elderly person like him I couldn’t even imagine how hard it must be for him. This is probably why he has so much anger toward us.
i can’t argue with that.@Bandit2398
Bandit2398 · 51-55, M
Look guys. I understand that no one likes being threatened about horrible things a god will do to them. I sure as hell don’t. But try to understand the people who do this have probably been taught this all of their lives. I don’t mean to sound patronizing of them but I’m sure it’s true. They have good intentions and are trying to help us so let’s try to be more considerate of that fact. I used to have these same fears and worried about people who weren’t “saved” so I understand how they feel.
Plus I would like to help them get rid of their stereotypes that atheist are just terrible people who are rude to them. And I really want this to be a respectful conversation.
Speedyman · 70-79, M
No atheism is a belief system which requires more blind faith than theism. It is an escape from reason @Bandit2398
Carazaa · F
@Speedyman I agree with that atheism is escape from reason to an extent, since it is self-evident looking at the world that there is a creator.
Speedyman · 70-79, M
Completely illogical. @Carazaa

Budwick · 70-79, M
@QuixoticSoul Oh.
That's too bad for you.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
The bizarre conflation of atheism and evolution has always mystified me. They have nothing whatsoever to do with each other.

Plus, you know, the vast majority of Christians in developed nations accept the theory of evolution. Hell, it’s Catholic dogma at this point.
@QuixoticSoul Thank you for pointing this out.
One of the great spiritual thinkers, Teilhard de Chardin, a paleontologist, in The Phenomenon of Man wrote about mankind evolving toward interconnectedness (long before the internet) and toward connection with God.
Ynotisay · M
You approached it with intelligence and reason. Often those things are in conflict with non-questioning belief. Right on. Not sure if you've been there but r/atheism on Reddit is filled with stories very similar to yours. A good resource for those struggling with "coming out" too.
Carazaa · F
Mormon? I think it is a cult. They add to the Bible! Try to just read the Bible and avoid cults🤗
Bandit2398 · 51-55, M
The prophecies have not come true. That’s just one of the many lies Christianity tells people. Most people just take their word for it without looking at the so called prophecies. Apologists just come up with ridiculous explanations like the one you did for Hess failed prophecies. One of the main reasons the Jews reject the New Testament is because they know what’s described in the ot prophecies has not been fulfill like the nt described.
But even if what’s described in the new nt does seem like it fulfills prophecies. That’s not very impressive. Anyone could add to stories to make it seem a prophecy came true.
And I don’t know where you got that it was thousands of fulfilled prophescies. The most apologists list is 400. You can see it on this website.
http://www.about-jesus.org/complete-chart-prophecies-jesus.htm
. @Carazaa
Carazaa · F
@Bandit2398 That is just Jesus prophesies but there is the entire bible, and it is the entire future. Just Revelations alone have hundreds of prophesies alone.
Bandit2398 · 51-55, M
@Carazaa well I just showed you a website that said it was at most 400 prophesies.
The author of Matthew said the virgin birth fulfilled a prophecy. But did you know there was no such prophecy? It was a mistranslation from Isaiah.

A guy who called himself leowander had commented on this post. He is a born again Christian. He told a stories about how he converted to Christianity from the occult and he lived close to Shirley McClain and he knew of a Hindi who converted to Christianity.
I pointed out what I thought was an obvious fault in his reasoning. Instead of answering it he removed his post and blocked me. I will respect the fact that he doesn’t want to talk to me. But I think it’s sad he did this. He couldn’t answer my objection and his brainwashed mind probably couldn’t handle the truth. It’s sad that someone like him can’t listen to objections with an open mind.
JBird · F
🤗 I am happy for you. People may judge you but we chose not to be ignoran and should be proud about it. I am agnostic.

When I posted this I had no idea so many people would comment on it.

@Bandit2398 now you're gonna quit your job and be answering here for your sins!
Bandit2398 · 51-55, M
Leowander responded to this and I pointed out what I thought was obvious. That he believed one of the lies of Christianity. Now he has removed his comment and blocked me. I guess some people just don’t want to listen to reasoning. If he doesn’t want me messaging him then I’ll respect that.

ok, it sounds like it may be a good reason to reject the occult. I would have to know more details.
Ifrom the story you told the Hindu became a Christian by deception. he also believes the lie that it’s not a religion despite the fact it clearly falls under the definition. You guys have been deceived by Christianity also.
Budwick · 70-79, M
I didn't place a bet, I simply threw out the possibility that you may come around again.

Are you saying you lived within walking distance of Shirley McClain? So did you come to the conclusion the occult was a lie based on evidence and reasoning?

I thought about what you said about the Hindu you gave a Bible too. You never said he became a Christian. He probably thought it was ridiculous nonsense but was being nice to not hurt your feelings. If he believed the Bible he probably would have became a Christian. @leowander
