I Know There Is No God

"God is a concept, by which we measure our pain."
J. Lennon

Man, some people say the coolest things.
I feel sad for people who don't get to experience our loving God..they miss out on so much.. 😞

@Ynotjenn: It is entirely possible of course that my belief system is wrong and others are right. I absolutely agree with that and am completely open to being shown how that may be the case. Which is of course a wildly different stance to that of most religious people's, and that I find very sad.
It would be nice if a religious person (of any faith) said "Yeah me too, I could be totally wrong and am open to be being shown how I might be." but in 38 years I haven't heard anyone say that and mean it. I like to think I'm on the side of the open minded group of people. :-)

@sleepyhead: I'm open minded and I've lived both ways. I'm not only content now with my life, but actually happy. So each to their own. As little no as you're happy dude ;)

@Ynotjenn: I've lived both ways too. Definitely each to their own. Because "their own" doesn't really mean anything at all anyway. One person saying the words "I believe this, that or the other" and another person saying "Well I don't believe in any of that, I believe something entirely different" all means nothing. Nothing anyone has ever said or done, or ever will do for that matter, on planet earth will ever have any meaning whatsoever. And I mean that in the most positive way possible! Depending on how someone is wired they will either read that as a positive or a negative statement.
Without getting too philosophical, "I think, therefore I am" kinda sums it up. We're looking for meaning because we can think, and we want meaning because we emote, the two things are an intellectually paradoxical disaster! To make it even worse we're all genetically programmed to want to survive, so it's little wonder that many people choose to believe there's some sort of afterlife or extension of their own life or soul or spirit.
So, there's an awful lot of people waiting for something that doesn't look like it's ever going to happen. A miracle, some sort of prophesised return, something that will give us all meaning and the answers we're searching for.
And it's funny because when I started looking at the world that way, when I was a lot younger this is, I realised that looking at my life that way made me feel so happy. Happy and free to enjoy my life and my time here on planet earth, however long that may be and live it the best way I can and be the best version of myself I can be as well.
But that's just my take on it, I'm open to other views. As you say it's whatever makes someone happy. :-)

In a way I agree with this quote. God or whomever you believe in as a higher order in any religion does not have the power to make you happy, sad or any other emotion. Religion itself is a means of making one whole. Embracing suffering and pain is often a road to wholeness. This road is traveled by you and you alone most of the time.

We all have our beliefs and to each his own.

Do you think people who don't embrace any kind of religion can never be whole?
HappyHeart · 56-60, F
No, I don't believe you need any religion at all. You will still live and have every life experience without religion. I think it helps some to have beliefs, ways to cope, meditate, etc., but it is not needed to live a happy productive full life.

@WritersRemorse: Same here really. I've kind of always thought that some people need a religion and some people just don't.

It's a song lyric...
SweetMae · 70-79, F
That is a sad quote.
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@sleepyhead: Oh...I will have to find that song.
sleepyhead · 46-50, M
@SweetMae: It's called God, and that's the opening line. The last line is "The dream is over." which people also often mistake as being a negative sentiment, even though both John Lennon and Yoko have both been quoted as saying it's the most positive lyric in the song.
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@sleepyhead: Thank you for sharing that.
sighmeupforthat · 46-50, M
what's this "we" shit?
sleepyhead · 46-50, M
Oh that's a pronoun, used in this case to refer to the collective everyone. Fairly common word.

@sleepyhead: 🤗
