I Have Random Thoughts

I knew a guy in high school who thought he was an extraterrestrial. He believed he was an advance scout, sent to assess earth's defenses to prepare for the eventual invasion and takeover. The details of this alien race were a combination of various sources. Their starships were out of Star Trek. He was studying German, so the aliens spoke German and had titles of nobility (he was a Count). He hated girls, so they were all males, and as it happened, vampires. He was never able to explain why this advanced race had sent him to a suburban high school instead of, say, the Pentagon.

His family was a little off. The father owned a small technical manufacturing firm, and was a "first adopter" - they were the first ones to have a quadraphonic sound system, a Pong game, and an electronic chess player. They also moved every few years from one house in the same neighborhood to another. The mother was a shrill, stupid harpy. My friend had an odd relationship with her, calling her a "goon" (he often referred to women as "goons") and would give her orders like "buy ice cream or your life will be in danger." I remember her coming around to our house one time to try to convince my mother to sign a petition opposing the opening of a group home for the developmentally disabled in our area; my mother didn't sign it. Despite my friend's contempt for his mother, he completely supported her on this issue, telling me he didn't want any "retards" in the area.

He carried around a notebook where he would record the names of people who annoyed him. These were going to be the first people killed when the invasion happened. In that idyllic period before anyone had ever heard of a school shooting, I didn't find this alarming; only weird. Hopefully something like that would be reported today, although probably nothing would happen to a kid who kept a notebook with the names of other kids he wanted to kill.

I don't know what happened to him; I lost touch with him after high school. The father's company is still around, now run by his brother, the only normal one of the bunch.
