I Believe Family Is Very Important

Would you talk to your child about belief in God?
I don't have children but my niece and I have had discussions. She is beginning to ask questions about faith and God. I've enjoyed our Q & A time.

@Pinkstarburst Your niece is like your daughter, so that's sweet.
Personally I think it's important to make one's own spiritual choices. I was raised that way. I would raise my kids that way if I had kids.
Madeleine · 41-45, F
@CopperCicada I agree. I'd talk to them about what I believe, but then I'd give them the right to ask questions and choose for themselves. Belief requires sincerity, and sincerity doesn't come by force.
Poppies · 61-69, F
Same here. Our conversation went, “some people believe this, others believe that, and here is what your dad and I believe.” Never suggested they had to believe the same as their parents.
Sapio · 46-50, M
I believe in God though I am a man of no religion. However if a specific faith was of great importance to me, then yes I'd discuss it with my children.
Sapio · 46-50, M
@Madeleine when I say embrace I'm not doing it just for her. I'm taking a chance to open myself to something that could better not only me as a person but our relationship as well.

You see for me it is honour. That's at the pinnacle of my pillar of life. It's the foundation behind my belief that marriage should only happen once and why I have never been married.

If I want to dress up and invite a whole bunch of people to eat a nice cake, I can do that anytime. Being wed to someone means more to me than a big party.
Madeleine · 41-45, F
@Sapio I hope that you will find her soon.
Sapio · 46-50, M
@Madeleine I'm not looking. I believe just like a miracle, the unexpected is the one I will fall in love with.
NaturalBeautyQueen · 41-45, F
I have spoken with them about it. But have never forced it on them. Whatever they decide to do with it, is up to them. I don’t make that decision for them.
Madeleine · 41-45, F
Yes, I would want to share my faith with them. Then, when they are old enough, they would be allowed to make their own decisions.
Madeleine · 41-45, F
@Autumnlover I agree.

Those who raised atheists children. How do they do that? We all do that in some shape. In my case, I won’t as I won’t be having any kids.
Madeleine · 41-45, F
@SW-User True. Atheists would talk to their children about how they don't believe in God. Parents will always have an influence.
Direwolf · 41-45, M
If they wanted to talk about it. I would give my opinion and why but would leave them free to make their own choice.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
I'd like to think my children would feel comfortable about talking to me about anything.
SW-User
No. It's BS!
Madeleine · 41-45, F
@SW-User Would you tell them that?
SW-User
@Madeleine Not literally, but certainly explain why and how it is founded on lies and deceit.
Madeleine · 41-45, F
@SW-User Brainwashing basically.
JimboUk · 31-35, M
From the second they breath air.
SW-User

Both my side of the family and the in-laws are quite religious so I do need to prepare her for their onslaught, yeah.
Madeleine · 41-45, F
@KingofPizza2 So you would talk to her about what you believe.
KingofPizza2 · 36-40, M
@Madeleine Right! Teach her how to think about it, and come to her own decision. Even if it's different than what I believe.
Madeleine · 41-45, F
@KingofPizza2 Interesting. What would you tell her?
hunkalove · 61-69, M
I never had kids, but if I had I would have waited until they asked and then told them what a load of crap religion is.
Madeleine · 41-45, F
@hunkalove So you would brainwash them.
SW-User
Yes. I would inoculate: likening it to a pretend story.
Madeleine · 41-45, F
@SW-User So to basically tell them to do not believe.
