I Like Email

Ok, no one actually likes e-mail. It went from "this is a tech wonder" to "I can't get through all this junk" in the blink of an eye. But there is one thing I do like, something that is now a lost art, the long form email.

I'm nostalgic because once upon a time, email was the only way to connect with the girl I love. We saw each other a lot, but it was at work where we couldn't talk or touch much. Then she went overseas living 12 time zones apart. Email was where we could take all the time and space we needed. We learned a lot about each other that way. Long stories about who we were and where we came from, the occasional "post-game" after we had a rare chance to see each other and step out on a date, a place to plan and lament the distance between us. It was a moment in time that we'd never recapture, if we had to start over today. Now we'd just text, or face time. Email is just full of spam and bills.

I realize I am describing email the way older people lament the death of handwritten letters. My "once upon a time" was less than 15 years ago. History accelerates, the Marxists taught me in college, and in this way at least, they were right.

I appreciate the time spent. I had a friend I met online, and we became close friends through lengthy emails/private messages between us. He’d take time to reply thoughtfully, and we got to know each other more intimately through those emails and PMs than I think we would have if we knew each other in “real” life. I’m nostalgic for the time I spent with him. I’m also nostalgic for the time of handwritten letters. My grandmother lived in another country, and we used to write letters to each other. I miss her and our letters so much.
I have a couple of friends who I still write long emails with. I love it. Great story thank you for sharing.
