A humpback whale swallowed a lobster diver whole and spit him out alive: ‘It tried to eat me’

“I was inside it. I was inside its mouth,” Packard, 56, told Mayo. “It tried to eat me.”

Packard’s harrowing tale is rare and unheard of among the experienced divers of Provincetown, Mass. Humpback whales don’t harm people on purpose, said Mayo, who worked on whale-watching boats as a teenager and whose father is a premier whale scientist.

Mayo said his father and his colleagues believe the only logical explanation was that the whale swallowed Packard by accident.

The whale didn’t mean to, he spit the guy out pretty quick.

@cherokeepatti I'm sure. A humpback can't swallow something that big.
@cherokeepatti so the diver is now officially a whale Goober?🤣

He can put that on his resumé

I'm not buying it, humpbacks are not stupid.

@FreeSpirit1 I'm with you

@HoraceGreenley I agree. Humpbacks eat plankton, and they’ve got acute sonar detection.

Jonah and the whale, 21st century

Jk lol it's possible he got caught in it's mouth, given how big it is. And it makes sense that he was spat out, given that their throats are surprisingly small. He might've made it up tho.
I was reading through the reddit thread his son set up, it was pretty great. He did say he was lodged in its mouth and eventually the whale was able to, well, spit him out.

I believe in the power that fake news has over people.

Cool story to tell the grandkids, huh?

I haven't done my own research on the available info, but seems like something fishy did actually happen. 🤔, a whale intakes how many gallons of sea water, before straining out chum? Idk.

A humback physically can't eat a human. Their mouth only opens about a foot wide .

And if he had a tank on...he wouldn't have fitted .

They eat krill for pity's sake .

And considering that divers usually hang around the 6m mark so they don't have to repressurise ...chances of running into a 13 - 15m. humpback looking for krill , is pretty slim .

A diver , to a humpback is nothing but a gobstopper😆

@OogieBoogie Good Idea! I have the title already
@HoraceGreenley "excuse me Ma'am, this is purely for Science "...😆

aren't they the ones that can choke on a grapefruit?
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@stound Yes. They have a big mouth but a narrow throat
