Is there a way to write a dissertation?

NickiHijab · F
Yeah. With a whole lot of tears and a goat sacrifice...

On a real note though, structures vary depending on referencing styles. So this may not apply to you 100% although it's generally the most common layout. I will say though, that minor differences make all the differences so I'd personally

1) Get your supervisor to sign off your research topic, then ask them for example dissertations. If they're willing to email it, great. If not, research for one and use it as a guideline.

2) Create a practical list of what you need to do, except break it up into sections.
For example
Day 1-3: Introduction and rationale:
Noting your rationale, the inspiration behind the topic. This is where you reference a background study or literature and a gap in their research that led you to yours. Following this you make sense of your chosen research question or hypothesis.
Do this for every section. Making it as concise as you can. Don't over do the introduction and take away from what should be in the discussion section.

3)The discussion section is where you delve into the pros and cons of your own study if you conducted one, for example the levels of validity and reliability. As well as your own opinion and both supporting and opposing theorists.
-Mention how it could be applied for example, if you have a hypothesis instead of a research question such as - "there will be a significant difference between (independent variable) and (dependent variable)" note how the findings have implications for real life settings. If you have a research question instead, this doesn't apply. The analysis however does.

4) Depending on the referencing style, I'd reference it in the Appendices/bibliography as I went along rather than altogether at the end. It's easier to keep track of this way. Highlight the ones you end up using so you know which ones to remove if need be. Dissertations are often edited a lot and more times than not you don't end up using all citians and references you initially planned to.

5) Get someone else to proof read each section as you complete it or altogether.

Oh and the final tip being being disciplined with your time. That's a biggie of course. Setting targets and rewards conditions the mind. Compartmentalise these targets.

@NickiHijab thank you sooo much. You have just outlined so much more than my tutors have in the last 4 months I have been writing this. My subject matter seems particularly triggering which is something we can talk about in pm...
To the point where they spend more time trying to say my idea are bullsh*t.
And because I don't want to argue I go silent only for the tutor to say. You seem defeated. That wasn't my intention.
So I come away insulted and no closer to understanding what you've just outlined above.

@Mellowgirl that sucks, did your study have to go through an ethics committee or board? Because if they authorise it, it doesnt matter what your tutor thinks of the subject matter.
If you have the go ahead then don't let the tutor prevent you from carrying it out.
You're free to PM me about the subject matter if you want to.

of course, you just have to cry a few times. submit it a few times and redo it then repeat this cycle til it's good enough
