Should students be assigned more reading homework in school?

If so, how much? If not, do you think there are other ways they should be encouraged to read more, or do you think students already read enough?

Yes they should.. And bring back cursive writing as well. Kids are becoming lazier and lazier

@SW-User I’ve read where some convenience store owners had problems with groups of young people hanging out behind their stores and spray-painting graffiti, etc. on it. They wanted to make it not just a good place to hang out so they put loudspeakers outside and played classical music. They stopped hanging out there.

I believe it..@cherokeepatti

@SW-User I used it at work one time when the young high-school kids wanted to blast hard rock music so loud us older women were getting headaches. The supervisor said we had to take turns listening to each other’s music for the entire day, so she wrote down our names & our favorite radio stations...I said Classical & gave the station number. At the end of the day that it was my turn, the girl that brought the boom box said it was broken, took it home, and never brought it back. Funny how that happened so quickly.

They can be assigned reading at home....schools are suggesting 20 minutes a day and I say one hour.

@33person I don’t know why 20 minutes, it’s the state I guess. I say one hour. If a child has time to play video games they have time to read at least an hour per day.

@cherokeepatti By the time they're in high school, would that increase or stay at an hour?
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@33person usually in high school they are given more homework, sometimes hours of it. I think an hour would still be good

In our school they have something called AR advanced reading
they are rewarded for reading
my son is in the 6th grade ,because of it he reads at 8th grade level
and is in advance reading as a class ,,he is advanced in math too

A love of reading starts before schooling, it's a parent's job to instil it.

@Quizzical What if the kid refuses to find interest in any activity that involves being quiet and sitting still?
Quizzical · 46-50, M
@33person Well, these days they just fill them full of Ritalin don't they? 🤔
33person · 26-30, M
@Quizzical They suggested doing that to me. I was such a child, but my mom didn't want me on Ritalin. I just ended up struggling with reading as a subject, compared to all the other subjects. Many times, I got an A in every subject except reading, in which I'd work harder than all the other subjects combined to get a B.

They should read more.
