School/college is the most depressing thing I’ve ever dealt with and I will not force it on my children

Education doesn’t equal intelligence, anyway. It’s not worth your mental health
BlueVeins · 22-25
It can lead to income, though! 💵 Most of the mental health consequences are caused by the toxic and illogical insistence that all children be considered to be above average.

@eerie The grass is always greener on the other side.

There are many valid criticisms of modern universities. However, "it's too hard and hurts my feelings" isn't one of them. This is an issue of mental weakness, not mental health.
@Sicarium What does that mean? What is mental weakness? Are you mentally weak? Did you ever fail at being perfect in something? Was it because you were mentally WEAK?
Sicarium · 46-50, M
@Stilltryinghard Mental weakness is being unable or afraid to adapt to new challenges that you are capable of adapting to.

No, as disingenuous as your question was, failing at something would not be an example of mental weakness, unless you gave a half-hearted attempt because you were already convinced you were going to fail. Giving up on college because it hurt your feelings and was too hard would be an example of mental weakness. Being triggered by microaggressions would be another.
@Sicarium People don't drop out because their feelings got hurt. Never ever happened once in history.

Some people had to drop out because they couldn't handle the challenges in that particular curriculum. That was not mental weakness unless you were his father and couldn't accept reality and decided to blame HIM. The it was your own mental weakness.

There is something that you misunderstand. Education does not equal school/college but does equal intelligence. Education is not about school or college. School or college is just a place for us to come and get educated, not an education.

Education is the knowledge that comes from long experience and many kinds of research. And we can be educated by not necessarily come to school. Let's think about this, compare an educated person and an uneducated person; Who has more understanding of the knowledge of life? Besides, those who are educated have higher morality and well-judgment than those who aren't. 85% of criminals are uneducated.

Education is not about making us smart, it is about forming us into a better person. Just because we are not good at something in school doesn't mean we should ditch out education. And remember, education is the big step that we have the world today.
It was definitely stressful for me, coming from a working class family. I pushed through it though and to this day I feel like the experience made me stronger.

It's against the law not to educate children.Maybe look for alternate methods such as home schooling.

@eerie oh ok.Yeah it's not good to force kids to a higher education.

I did not go to college after highschool and I have struggled the entire time to find jobs to help support my family and myself. I did start college many years ago but never finished because I had a child. I was a preschool teacher and later a director. None of which paid me a true living wage.

I am now in my 40's and earning my bachelors degree in English and Cfeative Writing which is what I should have done long ago.

School is not about intelligence. It is about experience and skills. It is about growing and learning more than you knew before.

If you can't handle it now then wait. But don't blame your inability to do school on anyone or anything but yourself.

My mental health is better now that I am achieving something other than sitting on my ass and complaining.

Im srsly thinking the same. I would rather they study something they like in a system that isnt standardised.
Its stressful. Thats why suicide is the second leading cause of death for college students.
cycleman · 61-69, M
take a yr or two away. discover more of yourself and develop another direction.
Fauxmyope2 · 26-30, F
It isn’t for everyone. I loved my college years though.

Amen. School nearly killed me.

I'm really liking it so far. It's certainly not for everyone, but it's for me. My dad is a college professor, so I guess it runs in the family.

That's because your professors believe if they give you a 2hrs lecturer you must spend 30 hrs a week doing mandatory homework and research.

I’m lucky to have found the perfect fit for university. I’ve experience more growth than I ever would have without going to school

I was happy to be done. I really didn't learn much from it but I had friends who did. They had more specialized careers than me.

I felt the same way 11 years ago when I was a nursing student taking advanced classes.

Depressing but becoming necessary today so encourage it
They want to break you.

@Spoiledbrat Those teachers want to break the child?
Some professors are tough. @SW-User
Some of my ancestors didn’t have access to formal education. When they finally did, it brought the family out of poverty. My parents, siblings and I all finished school, and we’re now helping my niece attend Stanford. When she’s stressed, there’s a counselor whom she sees and she’s taking classes at the pace that is comfortable for her. I don’t regret having gone, and overall it’s been an advantage. I’m hoping it will be the same for her.

@bijouxbroussard Stanord is lowkey toxic af, but also great at the same time. Like, they use the stories for low income students to get donations, then make us write a fuck ton of thank you postcards that their rich asses won't ever fuckin read. And there's SKETCHY ass shit going on in the University Archives, too. Like, I'm genuinely not even surprised that there's an admissions scandal because letters were right there for any kid doing work study to go read. Stanford is lowkey garbage. The only reason I'm going there now is because it's free.
