Do you think people who like to talk about politics are good at History?

hippyjoe195561-69, M
if they are on the conservative side yes. If they are on the liberal side- history started 5 minutes ago.
laotzu9270-79, M
Not if they are on today's left. They want to pack the Supreme Court, ignore the Constitution, eliminate the Electoral College and abolish free speech with the same nonchalance as if they were enacting an anti-littering ordinance.

Two different, mostly unrelated subjects I think.
SW-User
@SW-User Different? I don't think so.

History is the source that changes politics. That is how the political system change and grow by based on the events from the past. All of the experiences and knowledge from the past make the world that we live today. That is how we develop our government system.

@SW-User unfortunately I don't know if our politicians (or those in other countries) really listen to history or care much about it. Maybe people are different but it seems most seem to want to "rewrite" history to suit their narrative they want to tell and push their agenda.
SW-User
@SW-User Yes, unfortunately.

I love talking UK politics but am rubbish at history

People who study politics generally make good political historians because they usually look to find out why a previous president made a decision to do with they did in order to get a preferred outcome. That鈥檚 pretty standard but would your average Joe on the street be a good political historian. No and they wouldn鈥檛 care either.
justanothername51-55, M
Two different topics so no, not really.

@justanothername I want you to prove your first statement about why do you think politics and history are different from each other by not base on Trump. You have to based on your research, not on a person.
justanothername51-55, M
Historians make good historians. Politians are generally good at saying what ever is needed to get people to vote for them so if they need to tell people what they want to hear to get the votes then that鈥檚 what they do.

As I said previously.. Two different topics.@SW-User

@justanothername For me, politic and history have a connection with each other. I'm not talking about people (historians or politicians); my question to your comment is talking about the topic, not the people.

History is the source that changes politics. That is how the political system change and grow by based on the events from the past. All of the experiences and knowledge from the past make the world that we live today. That is how we develop our government system.

Your answer still not convincing me enough, but at least, it seems better than the previous answer.
justanothername51-55, M
Politicians will make quotes or statements that will be remembered for many years to come for good or bad reasons but that doesn鈥檛 mean they know anything about history.

You would think that many diehard conservatives and liberals are, but many of them just seem to completely ignore it.
SW-User
Some are and some aren鈥檛. Just like some politicians are students of history and some clearly are not.
BearDownChicago41-45, M
All depends I guess. Are they speaking with authority. Most are just good bsers
midnightsun26-30, M
I don't find any correlation but what they are good at is whining
GerOttman61-69, M
Some are, others just need some time to learn the basics.
SW-User
Not really, they just like the drama of the debates
SW-User
Good at revisionist history, maybe 馃き
TheMasterMan122-25, M
Very few are. Most are not however.
HannahSkyF
Most on this site don't seem to be.
SW-User
Sometimes. But usually not.

Zonuss41-45, M
I am good at talking about History. I know a lot about it too because I realize how it correlates with the present. 馃檪
SW-User
@Zonuss Great! I need you to help me this.
uncalled456-60, M
Not necessarily. I'd say that most of the loudest people are also the most ill-informed. :)
