Which language should I take in college?

I’m between Latin and Japanese. Latin is the easier option, but I think taking Japanese would be cool :/

Unless you are going into a Medical/Research/Biblical or other historical field Latin will do you no good. Japanese is great for business and you can relate to a lot of ppl. It also has the added bonus of enjoying anime in their home language. (For North Americans French would be a good 2nd option if you already have some Spanish background but want something easy but different) Seeing your reply Arabic could be cool if you liked Turkish.

@Gamalon I can’t help but disagree.... I really feel like it will :(
I’m in the USA.
Gamalon · 31-35, M
Ok The USA is very pro diversity right now and that is going to continue for a while. As long as you try hard and keep up what you have been doing, you will do fine. At the very WORST, you can guarantee a job as a COMP SCI teacher at a HS with your resume already.

@Gamalon Not everyone is pro diversity though.... Thank you. Haha, nah, I don’t know if I’m that good. Teachers should be smarter than me.

Latin is very useful across the board when it comes to all your other college classes. ultimately, it depends what degree your going for, and how you plan to use it.
ShaythePanTransMan · 22-25, T
@pentacorn That’s true. I’m just worried Japanese will be hard. It’s symbols and stuff....
pentacorn · F
@ShaythePanTransMan i know someone who taught themselves. they said that they knew they had it when they started thinking in Japanese. it's just new... not necessarily hard. go for it.
ShaythePanTransMan · 22-25, T
@pentacorn That’s cool.... Maybe I will....

Wow those are the two languages I’m studying 😮 I also want to take Ancient Greek. Clearly I’m not taking the ancient languages for practical purposes. But I’ve been to Japan and may want to study abroad there so there’s a more practical reason for it.

Hard for me to recommend one over the other though. They’re both interesting to me for very different reasons.
ShaythePanTransMan · 22-25, T
@SW-User Really? That’s cool.
Well, why?
SW-User
@ShaythePanTransMan When you study Latin and other ancient languages, you're learning to read, translate, and write. You're not learning to speak them and hold conversations because you're essentially learning a literary language. Which is fine since I love history, especially ancient Roman history, and I love being able to read what the ancients wrote. But it's very different from learning a functional contemporary language like Japanese. With Japanese, much of the class is speaking (though I also do appreciate learning to write the Chinese characters).
ShaythePanTransMan · 22-25, T
@SW-User Ahh yes then I will definitely take Latin.....
SW-User
I personally speak Latin and it's not a dying language, alot of Italians speak ot especially if you go to Rome or venice. Japanese on the other hand is hella hard, you'll need to know the language plays the words
ShaythePanTransMan · 22-25, T
@SW-User But you’re back?
SW-User
@ShaythePanTransMan yeah I'm back I'm not gonna let bigoted people make my life hell just because there life isnt going great.
ShaythePanTransMan · 22-25, T
@SW-User I didn’t know you could restart your account if you delete it. I’m glad that you decided that. Just block all the jerks :)
SW-User
I dunno. I took Japanese for seven years. It was pretty easy, I guess. But I already knew a lot of the kanji, since I had to go to Chinese School on Saturdays.

Latin just seems boring af and lowkey useless.
ShaythePanTransMan · 22-25, T
@SW-User 7 years?! Damn. That’s cool.
Exactly, but 3 credits/a semester of foreign language is required....
SW-User
A dead language or an extremely hard language. Why do you do this to yourself.
ShaythePanTransMan · 22-25, T
@SW-User because I don’t want to take fucking Spanish again. I got up to Spanish 4 in high school.
I don’t enjoy foreign lanagauge that’s why
pikminboy · 26-30, M
take one that you will use one day. if you go as a tourist to another country , you can speak
ShaythePanTransMan · 22-25, T
@pikminboy the problem is I’m not going to use either....
Except maybe Japanese a bit because idk I watch anime stuffs and games
The problem is I can read Spanish and understand some of it but I took 4 damn years of it so I doubt 1 semester of Japanese is gonna help me much
I also took Turkish in middle school (I went to a Muslim-majority private middle school) and that was fun I’d do that but they don’t offer it at my college
SW-User
take japanese if you can handle being surrounded by weebs
ShaythePanTransMan · 22-25, T
@SW-User ahh that’s true.... well maybe I should get back into anime and make friends with them
SW-User
Klingon or Elvish Sindarin
ShaythePanTransMan · 22-25, T
@SW-User they don’t offer it lol
Also I’m not THAT kind of nerd
