Why is "lens" singular and "lenses" plural? Why isn't "lens" the plural of "len"?

DrWatson · 70-79, M
The word comes from the Latin singular noun "lens", which means "lentil". By the middle ages, the word was used to refer to an ocular lens, which is lentil shaped, in that it is convex. Many Latin nouns end in "s" in the singular. The plural of this one is "lendes".

Because there's no word 'len' in English dictionary. Lens is the valid word and yes for a single object. So obviously lenses are correct plural.

@Callmyname no coz words are not created whimsically. There's a scientific pattern through which most words are created or derived. This includes pronunciation.

@Callmyname words which are included in dictionary and used in academic purposes are never created whimsically. Instead of giving false arguments you should update yourself how linguistics works. Also, majority of the English words are borrowed from other languages. Even the letter 'I' is derived from germanic 'ich'. And you from 'euch'. Now a lot people say 'you' as 'ya' but 'ya' has no value in linguistics.
What about jeans
@Callmyname definitely! Especially when no ones getting mad haha. How can you get mad about the use of a word?
