Why do we as a society encourage teens to go to college right away after high school?

I didn’t know what the hell I wanted to do. But taking time off or delaying college makes you seem like you’re lazy or something. I just wanted to figure out what I like. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Parents are worried if you don't go to school right away you will just bum around your whole life. Nobody want's a 37 year old kid still living at home and working at Burger King!
The first two years are usually Generals, and you can figure out your major during those years.

Its pressure not to "waste time" but really i think u should if u need it as long as u know u wount just let everythig go
@celine211 I agree with celine211, it is alot easier to go to college right after high school. I took the SAT's in high school three times, I cant imagine how I would do it out of school, and sure i made the wrong decision on what college to go to, I went to art school but at least I have a full bachelors, if i tried to go now back to school I dont have the money, I cant pass the tests. Everyone needs a bachelors i think I need to go back for a masters, I regret that I didnt go for an accelarated bachalors and masters program its been tough to try to figure out how to get back to college, where to get the graduate record exam prep help and working overtime on top of that. many people feel this way once they start working and then never get back into college, plus there were a few scholarships that I wouldn't have qualified for now at my age I would have not gotten them and spent more money.

Well while your brain and body are used to school it’s a good idea to keep going . Plus the opportunity to incur debt usually makes going back impossible
There's much more to college than books and lectures. it's a way to ease into generation shock in a kinder environment.

If you go away to college you begin to have an idea of what it's going to be like not living at home. it's a way to meet people who don't live where you live, don't know what you know, know stuff you don't know.

Too often when people don't start college after high school, they may never start.

That said, there's nothing wrong with taking some time to get a direction, as long as you're looking for a direction.

There's nothing wrong with waiting. I took two years off before starting college. I was sick to death of school and knew I wouldn't do my best if I went straight to college. So, I worked a couple years. Best decision for me because when I went to college I was focused and I did very well.

The education system could be equated to a conveyor belt. If you stop to get off it, then you’re outside of the mass production. It’s the better choice honestly, rather than doing something and discovering you hate it later, and only did it because of other reasons.

Hey you're back! I think college is only as good as the people who surround you and society

Or encouraging kids to start with a 2-year local community college. Keep the education going without the pressure of a 4-year university. Plus HUGE savings on costs.

I think you took the smarter approach.

I'm only 21 yrs old and already make 40,000 dollars a year.

Fuck college. Skilled labor all the way. Union strong.

And when it comes time to go back to school for engineering they'll even pay for it.

I also wonder why college is pushed so much more than technical school. Most people want to go to work and make a great salary right out of school, tech school does this when college doesn’t.

Hasn't always been that way. Lots of kids take a gap year after HS to travel, work odd jobs, clear their head.

money! and it makes sense for a percentage of students, but certainly not all of them.

It's so your brain can learn
