What does "ya'll" mean?

@Bootsiebaby Why? Many contractions include the whole first word and only part of the second word.

@Bootsiebaby Welcome to the English language, it’s a clusterfuck.
Y'all= you all in the southern US

@Bootsiebaby He was a brilliant and funny man, believe me. I heard a few of his sermons - he was an extemporaneous speaker, very eloquent.

It is a contraction of the words You and All. It basically means that you are addressing/ referring to a group of people at once. Example..."Ya'll come back now real soon". It's mostly a U.S. southern dialect term.

You will, I’m guessing. Since it’s ya’ll and not y’all.

The ya'll vs y'all is how language always evolves. Even Lewis and Clark had multiple spellings of the same word (a little less stress on conformity was also rule of day). English had similar to German Ihr in Old English words from Old German... Streamlined English lost it over time.

I used to be pretty rigid. Family mythos around intellect and education was mostly responsible. Oddly enough, marriage to a language instructor with a linguistics degree softened my outlook considerably.

@Bootsiebaby Maybe it’s just an error

Hey, no need to make passive aggressive posts. Let's all get along here. I know this is targeted at the edit I made to a previous post. Relax a little!

I don't know what it means because I never bothered to say it . I have heard some people use it but I would not say it myself.

It's "y'all" with a misplaced apostrophe.

You all. They are words. They Don't have to make sense. Math is a more precise language.

@Bootsiebaby Nothing. Just a joke. But the word ain't is the same way. Like I said language is not precise. That is how they evolve and form separate languages. We don't have cockney. Just like there is no southern US dialect there. Actually the southern US was influenced I believe by Scots and Irish ways of speaking.

A contraction of 'you all', everyone you are speaking to. Similar to 'you guys' or 'youse guys'
