any tips for getting back into work after 5 years on the sick?

i have schizophrenia.... but i think im finally ready to go back to work, at least im sick to death of sitting at home everyday

They say up to 90% of vacancies aren't advertised.
So look for an area you'd like to go into and go from there.

Lots of social work positions, especially in residential care, look for folk with varied life experience as much as qualification.
Try the charity run places as they seem to be one of the few groups with money at the moment so they're hiring more than local authorities.

does it matter about criminal convictions? i have a few drug convictions (possession just) and one for supplying drugs but that was all like 7 years plus ago

@TheCoolestCat Don't quote me (you'll need to check) but i suspect those will be considered 'spent' and so shouldn't affect your chances of applying.
But check first.
As you can imagine, every social work candidate is heavily vetted in terms of history and conviction for anything.

You need to establish a work history first to prove you are reliable, have the necessary skills and commitment.

Voluntary work is the ideal way to achieve this.
