Was college really easier back in the 90's and before, I know it was cheaper but was it easier?

The hours in the library digging through books, journals, and peer-reviewed articles as opposed to being able to do keyword searches on a laptop to find resources.......definitely not easier back then.

@SW-User at least it was cheaper

It really depended on the assignment. I wrote so many papers over the years, I’m not sure what the average was. @lizzy96

@SW-User I guess its better know that we have a computer, but along with wifi comes distraction and videos teaching students how to cheat.
I suppose it might be tougher in some respects - in some disciplines there's more to know now. Every year, there's more to know. More to learn. More time pressure.

Because so many employers absurdly demand a bachelor's degree at minimum now, more kids are starting college. Less are finishing.

More college students 'in my day' had parents who were paying for schooling and more students still believed their parents could actually kill them for dropping out or flunking.

I'm willing to concede that it might be a bit tougher academically, but a lot of kids who skated through high school avoiding tough courses suddenly come up against the college-with-little-or-no college prep courses wall. They're not ready.

The gentle reward-without-effort philosophy of pre-college education ends with a huge shock on the first college exam. What do you MEAN, I flunked the test?

College resembles high school these days, or middle school. You get x points for doing your homework, y points for answering questions in class. Where'd that come from? When I was in college, you did those things in order to learn, not to earn points. And if you didn't do those things, your exam scores certainly reflected your lack of effort!

@SomeAreBoojums Oh boy our exams are hard if you don't go to lecture properly do your readings, make good notes, review your notes and homework you fail. Not all classes count coming to class as a grade, you have to actually speak in some classes to get participation points. And in some classes, you have quizzes based on your reading for that day, which can have multiple choice and free choice. Teacher ain't fooling around, they know if you haven't read the material. Its community college and some of the professors that teach freshman level classes that make college seem like high school or middle school.

There was no easy internet access back then so we didn’t have that resource or that distraction.

@SW-User They are still handwritten a lot nower days too, they want to reduce cheating

@lizzy96 I taught a course a few years ago and the exam was on laptop with a program that locked out the internet. It allowed file access because the exam was open book.
lizzy96 · 26-30, F
@SW-User My college does have this lock down browser, but many of teachers still do tests on paper,I'm guessing students have figured out aways to go around the lockdown browser.

I like your profile picture. And Idk about the college.

@lizzy96 I just wanted to tell u that I liked your profile picture, but I didn't want to completely ignore your question, so I added that at the end.
lizzy96 · 26-30, F
@Dan193 bud I wanted to ask the question so us younger genration knows
Dan193 · 31-35, M
@lizzy96 alright

It was actually a lot harder. We had to actually learn things and we didn't get the week off because our candidate lost the election.
Not easier in term of the work. But not having to worry so much about post-graduation debts was something I suppose we took for granted.
lizzy96 · 26-30, F
@bijouxbroussard well my dad pays for my college fees because how much more expensive nower days, so will I have post-graduate debts?
@lizzy96 You may not. But that’s the biggest complaint I’ve heard from those who are working their way through college today. I worked and my parents helped me. I was actually able to pay back my parents (even though they didn’t ask me to). I don’t know how that would work for students now.
