Did your public schools serve Mystery Meats in the school lunches?

Some school children in Nebraska got sick recently in Nebraska after eating the chili they were served in their school lunches. It was discovered that the chili had been prepared with kangaroo meat, which the school said was purchased from their vendor company "Sysco"....now I'm wondering how much cheaper kangaroo meat is than beef and why they didn't want to come out and tell students that was what was in it before they served it. And what all other meats have been substituted in meals.

The local schools here are so health conscious omg and they are making the food menu even healthier soon, if that’s at all possible 😂 I don’t think kids need a lot of fat free foods bc they burn it off easily at their age from their energy but extra banana 🍌 other fruits 🍇 won’t harm I guess. I bet they will be super hungry when they get home tho 🙄 lol

@SW-User We need fats to digest the vitamins and help build hormones etc. Fruit is always better than sweets. Sugar and corn syrup and processed items for the most part should be eliminated. Some of the stuff they put on the menus at local schools is pure junk food.

It’s been known to be bad hasn’t it ? Do you remember when Jamie Oliver wanted to change the school bad menus ? That seemed to make some positive changes but it kinda fizzled out after a while 🌭 @cherokeepatti

Public school as a different meaning in the UK. The ones in public school would be tucking into roast duck, grouse and wild boar!

There is nothing wrong with Kangaroo meat - sounds like it was not cooked or stored properly
@cherokeepatti Food service is deceptive about food contents all the time.

It's common for restaurants to swap more expensive grouper with other fish. It's common for restaurants to be deceptive about the origin of seafood, swapping farm raised (and fairly gross) shrimp for wild shrimp. Same with shellfish, lying about the origin.

It's the same with meats. It's not uncommon for ground meats to either not be what they are sold as or to have a bunch of mixed meats in them. It's also not uncommon for damaged or out of date meats to be used. When I worked in a restaurant, a manager of another restaurant came and bought our burnt up and old burgers to put into his chili.

@CopperCicada For those reasons I don't get foods with ground meats in them. I've heard of what you're saying, bread pudding is made with buns and bread leftover from the day before as is stuffing....Chicken salad might be made from leftover roasted chicken, etc.
@cherokeepatti Some of that is worked into the flow of any grocery or restaurant. Same thing one does at home. But yea, ground meats. And fish.

Why would kangaroo meat make them sick though? :/
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@indyjoe The price of certain meats like ground turkey and ground beef is not cheap like it used to be back when I was in school...they are looking at alternatives. The thing is they should be transparent enough to tell people what they are doing to the food.

@cherokeepatti true. Deer are plentiful. I wonder why that can't be an option.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@SW-User Plus if they had to import the meat that would add to the cost.

How strong was this chili? Kangaroo and Beef taste nothing alike.

Mind you the last time I had kangaroo it still tasted of radiator grill... 😰
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Thevy29 I have no idea. But considering Nebraska is famous for growing corn and there are plenty of cows there it's kind of ridiculous to feed school kids substitute meats. It seems like zoos culled the kangaroos because they had too many and a company bought up cheap meats. There needs to be some explaining done about this.

Now you make me wonder! We had many lunches served with some unidentifiable so-called "meat" but I always assumed it at least came from a cow. Now I don't know!
Degbeme · 70-79, M
The class I took in high school was the one that prepared the lunches. Everything was a mystery. 😁

Our schools didn't/don't serve lunches, thank god

Don't know bring my own to avoid
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Bowser I'm sending the boy's lunches with him each and every day...don't trust contractors all that much. Same contractor, Sodexho, screwed up the casino's buffet so bad we stopped eating there even when the casino sent coupons for free meals.
Bowser · 31-35, M
@cherokeepatti I'm a creature of habit no matter what I bring my own lunch
