Why is Arkansas pronounced `Arkansaw`? Conversely, why isn`t it spelled `Arkansaw` if they want to pronounce it that way?

Because "Arkansas" is French mangling a Native American name, while "Kansas" is English mangling a Native American name.

Why is Worchester, MA pronounced "Wooster"? Why isn't it pronounced like Dorchester or Rochester? Or why aren't the latter two pronounced like the former?
