What Are Your Thoughts On The Japanese Education System

My elementary school I went to did this!
MANNERS BEFORE KNOWLEDGE
It is believed that the goal for the first few years of life is not to gain knowledge or score high but to establish Good Manners and make them into a good person. The emotion of being generous, empathetic is inculcated in them. In Japan, students don’t take any exams until they reach class 5 i.e the age 10. Yes, they do give small assessment tests. Children are taught to respect others being gentle to animals and birds, be protective towards nature. Teaching Qualities like self-control and justice is also a part of this early curriculum.NO SWEEPERS AND CARETAKERS
NO SWEEPERS AND CARETAKERS
In Japan, students have to clean their own classrooms, cafeterias and even toilets all by themselves. While doing this, students are divided into small groups and assigned the tasks. This encourages them to work in teams and help others thus giving their team working skills a push. This makes kids respect each and every work.
TEACHING IN JAPAN IS ALL ABOUT QUALITY AND NOT QUANTITY
The Japanese say that if you teach what you learn, you will remember 95% of it. And if the teacher stands at the board and lectures simply listening to the subject students will retain far less. So, it is important to have discussions on problems.
ALL STUDENTS EAT THE SAME BALANCED MEAL
All the students are provided food from a standardized menu in school. Japanese encourage their kids to eat healthy in realistic portions. Teachers and students both eat together which solidify their relationship.
ENCOURAGE TEACHING TRADITIONAL ART
Japanese students are taught traditional arts like Shodo (Japanese calligraphy) and Haiku ( a formal style of poetry). This helps in promoting the value of their tradition and culture to them.
GREETINGS
Kids show up at school and greet all teachers with a big “Good Morning.” Then at the beginning and end of each class a greeting of respect and a bow is performed.
SHOES FOR EVERYTHING
First there are the outside shoes that you use to come to school. In the school entrance area you must change to your indoor shoes/slippers which might or might not be of different color to indicate your grade or class number. Then the bathroom has its own set of slippers and lastly everyone has their own completely different set of shoes for the gym.
CURRICULUM
Everyone in Japan is taught the same national curriculum. However the 47 different states of Japan do have a little control in adding their own individual curriculum requirements on top of that.

TEACHER SWITCH
Here in Japan teachers have to rotate to a different school within their state every 3 to 7 years. If married you will stay in your home county, but if single you are eligible to be transferred anywhere in your home state. On top of the school rotation, every year teacher’s grades are rotated however the principal sees fit. Every year is different for a Japanese teacher and most of the time they don’t know until 2 weeks before the change! Both good and bad!
Teacher long
The school year starts with the cherry blossoms in early April and ends in late March. School is attended approximately 240 days which is 60-80 days more than in America. There is a lot more non academic material in the school day here but Japanese spend much more time at school than Americans.
