I Am a Computer Geek

I don't like throwing out perfectly functioning electronics and often try to keep them running as long as I can. Unfortunately my old Gateway finally died (a bunch of capacitors popped on the motherboard) after 12 years of constant use. I can't really be mad about that since I generally don't turn my PCs off for months at a time and with that kind of use I think it's more than made for the initial cost and all the time I spent repairing it and maintaining it. Kinda of sad to see it go since I learned quite a bit with that old machine.

@GlassDog I repair computers as a hobby for friends and family and have thrown away parts simply because I hate clutter. You can wish those parts will get used but eventually you tired of tripping over things.

I'm a bit like this. I have a computer museum at home. The computer I had when I was 11 still works.

Understand ... I was a Microsoft fan since Dos-1, but somewhere starting around Xp it became more and more like a top heavy train on a narrow gauge track with features that seem to have been designed to please malware developers rather than the average consumer. I can't for the life of me understand the constant changing of the user interfaces for Windows and their Office products.

I absolutely love my Apples. At twice the $$ of a Windows PC it's still a bargain.

@jonathan I have a much newer custum built PC centered around an ASUS Sabertooth Z87.

What kind of computer will you get now?

I went the home-brew route for years and years and sill have bunches and bunches of "stuff" in the back of the basement.

I think it's now time for me to throw Microsoft and Windows onto that junk pile and go back to home brews and more reliable software.

*JessicaMarie* I know what you mean. I have a clear out every now and again. When am I ever again going to need a graphics card for a VESA slot? :O

I haven't had many issues with Windows. Then again I tend to look at them as challenges. You must beat it into submission!
