I Am a Computer Geek

Just Finished A Project

I spent the last week fixing up an old laptop for a friend of mine. He had an old Dell Latitude and it bought back so many memories. XD

It's actually not too bad of a laptop considering it's age. After a few nights of tampering with it and cleaning it, I was greeted with the old Windows XP logo and managed to get into his account. I had to
uninstall all the extra software he had and update a few drivers, but I finally got it fully functional.

Dispite internet explorer only running really old sites on it, couldn't even get Google to load, I managed to get Chrome installed so he can at least browse the internet.

So now that everything is cleaned up and working, I gotta give it back. But I might buy it iff him. I've grown attached these last couple weeks. XD

Fun Fact: [i]This site will actually load on the old browser. This and NeoPets. lol

Cool, I know the feeling... I've brought to life a few computers/laptops myself... Sadly, it can be 100% functional, "like new", but since all technology evolves so quickly, then every year they become more and more obsolete and can be completely useless in a matter of, say, 10 years...
I have a very old laptop somewhere which runs Windows 95... I have a couple of DOS games in there, from even earlier days there: digger, Winter Olympics (1986 I think it was) and Indy, a racing game... super basic graphics but so much fun...

@drymer I got lucky with this one. My friend had the original Halo installed on the laptop and I managed to back the files up and migrate them to my desktop before he had me do a system restore on it. :3

Luck plays a very important role when trying to fix a computer... 馃榿

Do you know how to install new hard drives? I have a 500 GB one, but IDK how to make it work on my computer

@QueenElsa First you need to make sure it's compatable with the hardware you already have. If it's the same brand as what's already hooked up, then you should be good. But a lite research is always a good thing.

I'd also recommend looking up a YouTube tutorial for a visual reference.

@NeighFlowers It should be, I'm moving it from a Dell Precision T3500 to a Dell Precision T3500

@QueenElsa Ok. They should definitely be compatible then. lol Still, YouTube has all the answers to life.

@geoam1 The way I got Chrome installed was a little tricky. The coding for XP's software doesn't really like modern websites. So I worked around it by installing the set up files for Chrome and Java onto a flash drive and plugging it into a usb.

From there it's just an easy prosses of running the set up and instalation.

@geoam1 No problem. I thought for days it was just a hardware issue with the laptop, since even a hardwire connection wouldn't load google. But it's just software for the old versions of Explorer, Firefox and Safari.
