I Am a Child of the Universe

So check this out. This really puts into perspective how immense our universe is. I was trying to explain to a non science friend today about how mind boggling immense the universe really is. I'm not exactly sure how I came from such a small rural town and developed such a passion for science and learning. So.....First, there are trillions of galaxies in the observable universe. Ours is the Milky Way. Here are two photos of the Milky Way. The first is one taken from Earth. So it's a photo from inside our galaxy.

Now consider this bros and sisters;

When we transmit radio waves such as music from a radio station that data/music travels at the speed of light which is 671 million miles per hour, or 186,000 miles per second.

So since our first radio broadcasts 100 years ago, those broadcasts have been traveling outward through the universe at the speed of light.

Here's a photo of our galaxy

Here is how far those broadcast have gone after 100 years of travel at the speed of light

It's only travelled the circumference of that little blue dot at bottom right...... keep in mind, this is just our own galaxy among trillions.

This is a photo taken by the Hubble space telescope. It's the famous "Deep Field View". The photo itself is only looking at a tiny sliver of the sky. 1/24 millionth of the observable sky to be exact.

Each of those are a galaxy like our own Milky Way.

Last week I camped in the desert mountains of SW Texas. This area is the least light polluted area in the US. I laid on my back and just gazed up at the night sky. Thinking of many things. I looked at the stars, knowing that most of my physical body actually came from stars just like those....many of millions of years ago. You might think that I would feel small living as a grain of sand within the vastness of the universe. But I didn't. I felt a deep sense of wonder. A sense that as I often say..... ironic that because I come from the stars, I am a conscious, self-aware example of the universe examining itself. Such moments remind me of how strongly I feel connected to all living things. A reminder that true joy... true peace comes from noticing all of the beautiful moments that surround us each and every day. I suspect I am quite a lucky man to walk through life with a true peace and daily joy that is unaffected by the curveballs that life throws at us.
