I Love to Dance

Nurkhon Yuldashkhojayeva

Nurkhon was one of the first Uzbek female dancers to perform without the traditional Islamic veil. For defending her right to take control of her own body, she was murdered by her brother in 1929. She was just 16 years old.

In Soviet times, there was a statue to her memory, but that has since been taken down. Her name is remembered only in a cinema in Ferghana. Which is why I am remembering her now 馃槦

Now this is truly touching! This young girl was very brave, and I am praying for her soul. It is sad that her own brother took her life away from her, and that she was only sixteen. 馃檨 I can only be thankful that we have the freedom to choose how we like to dance, and may we all remember her. :)

This is such a sad story, and sadder still that there has been very little change in the last 68 years.

@Serenitree It is sad when progress goes backwards. My Russian room mate told me about her today. She was a heroine in the USSR and the colonial government executed those responsible for her murder and outlawed "honour killing". It is good that Uzbekistan is no longer colonised by Russia, but it is very sad that they still think traditional Islamic morality is more important than female dignity.
