I Still Remember September 11

I will never forget. My husband and I were in Germany at the time serving in the US Army. We were getting ready to get off for the evening when a soldier came through the motor pool and told us the US was under attack. Then the office phone rang and I was told formation now. We never really had end of day formations so when I went outside my husband was sitting on a picnic table with some other soldiers and when I said something to him he told me to stop spreading rumors. One of the soldiers ran into the building to his room at the top of the stairs and we followed. He turned his tv on and there it was. In formation the officer that came out to talk to us physically went to his knees crying and had to be carried from the field. He had just transfered to us from Washington DC. They told us to go home before the base was locked down. The next few days were a blur for us through the tears. I couldn't do anything that night but sit and watch the news footage over and over again and cry. My husband had to turn the tv off and make me go to bed. The next morning even though we lived in off post housing and two minutes from post it took us four hours to get to formation. Everyone was late that day. The Germans were mad because most of them were late too trying to get to work. Theyes let us go home early that day and leaving post there were several German family's in front of our US post sign praying among thousands of flowers, cards and candles left there. Then after the tears the anger hit. No I will never ever forget.

Yes I agree and because of people thinking with their heart ran to join the service to the point of them turning people away. My unit got a few that joined because of 911 that never should have joined.

Thank you for this vivid memory of a sad and terrifying time. I am glad to know about the support those German citizens gave you. I'd never heard about that.
