I Lost My Grandfather

My Grampa died this evening.

I didn’t know him well. I don’t have one of those loving families (either maternal or paternal.) Just wasn’t lucky in that regard; in many other ways but not in that way.

But I’m thinking now about the time he hugged me. The one, singular time; & how wonderful it felt. Him, smiling with arms outstretched & I leapt at this opportunity like a child who’s Christmases had all come at once. I was thirty-two years old. I’m smiling now thinking of that moment. Thankful that it existed.

So, Grampa Harry; wherever you are now:

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
