Capricorn in Aquarius - Part Two
Daddy was still pale and barking occasionally when he appeared for breakfast the next morning, Mom stared at him, then at my innocent expression as I descended the stairs behind him, slowly and carefully. My hand holding the railing was ready to grab him if he slipped -
"What are you doing out of bed?" Mom demanded.
"I'm taking my daughter to school." Daddy's voice was a little breathy and hoarse as he reached the foot of the stairs. He looked at Mom blankly. "You do recall today is a schoolday and -"
Mom found her voice. "She can walk! She's perfectly healthy. It will do her good to get a little exercise - and you're not well yet and -"
"Oh, Melinda, please, don't start. I've been in bed a week already. If you want food on your table, I have to go to work and earn a paycheck. Merrilee - "
I stepped to his side obediently. Then I swung around as the smell of something burning drifted out of the kitchen. Daddy noticed it, too.
"Your bacon is burning, Melinda," he said crisply. "You better tend to it."
Mom screeched in despair and rushed to the kitchen as Daddy and I slipped out of the house. I sild into the front passenger seat and sighed. One down, one to go.
