My father's pinched face looked lighter as his expression changed. He spoke slowly but surely.
"Your mom went out this afternoon to refill a prescription -" He waved a hand toward the side table beside his bed. " - and get a new one filled. While she was gone, the phone rang, and I answered it. It was Mr. Evans."
Oh, my God. What was he doing, checking up on me?
Daddy drew a deep breath. "He wanted to give me a heads-up on this - " he patted his pocket. "That it was coming and to look for it." A soft sigh. "I didn't share that call with your mother, and I don't want you to do it, either. I heard you were fighting another detention, and I concur.I'll talk to him myself and get this removed - tomorrow - "
He began to cough again. I rushed to his bedside and hugged him. I didn't realize
I was crying until Daddy pushed me back and wiped away the drops from his hair and shoulders.
I loved my father more than ever before.
