I Love to Write
Capricorn in Aquarius - Part Two
Mari walked me to the Disciplinary Room at the end of the day. She made no mention of the scene this morning, but she did ask about Daddy. I told her he seemed to be improving.
She smiled. "I'm glad. Mickey was asking after you and -"
A stranger teacher walked by. "Where do you young ladies belong? I'll give you exactly one minute to get started. or you'll join those people - " A thumb toward the room behind us.
Mari flushed. "See you, Mer." She hurried out the nearest exit as I turned the knob and walked in. The new teacher followed me in.
It was chaos. It was hotter than blue blazes inside. There was no teacher in sight and the kids were leapfrogging over the desks and each other; a few holdbacks against the wall were cheering each other on.
"People!" the teacher bellowed. The room fell silent. He strode to the front of the room. "Names will be taken. All of you. Every one. You're all getting extra detentions. Come on now, hurry up -" He sat down at the desk.
I hoped he didn't mean me. I already had a week's worth to go on my original one, and I knew if Daddy found out about anything additional tacked on, my home detention would be extended. I tried to sneak back to the end of the line and slide into an empty seat. He spotted me.
"You too, young lady. Or do you need a gold-plated invitation?" Muffled giggles
from the other kids.
I felt my world crunching around me.
