I scrambled to my feet. There were two wide, greasy streaks on my calves, but I didn't pay any attention. I wanted to die under Kathleen's stern, angry gaze. She spoke without turning around. "Sharon, take those children upstairs and start running baths. Get them dry things. I'll be up shortly."
The girls scrambled up the stairs, giggling and whispering among themselves. In the silence following, I heard doors closing and down the hall, then the muted running of water.
Kathleen turned to Johnny as she removed her wet rain cape. "Well? What have you to say for yourself?"
Johnny started to blather something. Kathleen cut him off. "You're drunk. Drunker than a pair of skunks. What did I tell you about accosting girls on the street - " She turned to me. "Especially this one. Her parents are probably looking for her - and this is the first place they'll look.Get your coats on and you get her home in double-quick order."
"I - "
Kathleen cut him short once more."I don't have time to hear it. You do as I say now. We'll talk about it when you get back."
She went into the kitchen. Johnny grumbled nonstop as he fumbled me into my coat and struggled into his. We left the Northwest Facility in record time. I wanted to hold his hand, but he batted me away. He was either drunk or angry, and I didn't want to know which at this point.
