Daddy continued to hold down my hands as he drew a deep breath and went on with what he had to say. "I don't want you in that area - ever again. I will continue to pick you up after school, every day, and drop you off in the morning - for a good long while. If you get off early, you can go into the counselor's office and call me at work to let me know. But you WAIT THERE - " Daddy made an effort to not raise his voice. " - and don't wander off elsewhere. Am I understood?"
I nodded. I didn't point out the fact that the Northwest Side Center was only six blocks in the other direction from school, and I had to go into the area in order to attend classes.
"I told you before," Daddy continued, "You're not to see Johnny. Under ANY circumstances. I'm not going to ask you whether or not you saw him while you were there -"
I felt a flush rise behind my ears. Daddy probably knew - he was undeniably smart. But he was going to give me enough rope to hang myself.
"You're almost seventeen," Daddy went on. "You're a young lady - "
I opened, then closed, my mouth. Daddy had forgotten I had turned seventeen in August, just before school had started again. But I didn't feel this was the time to correct details. I was closer to eighteen than seventeen -
Daddy leaned forward. His near hand rested on my bare knee. His eyes got dark and round. "Do you understand, Merry? I don't want you to get into trouble. Promise me you won't."
This was absurd. What was he driving at? "All right, Daddy."
