Capricorn in Aquarius - Part Two

Kathleen swung open the door and smiled brightly. "Officer! Good morning."

A quick glance showed me that these officers were not the four who had been on duty last night. I breathed a little easier.

"Good morning," replied the officer a little gruffly. "I'd like to speak to Mr. Christianson and Mr.Daniels, if you please."He withdrew two warrants from the pocket of his large coat. "I have a federal warrant for their arrests."

Kathleen looked surprised - or was that a face she was putting on? "They're not here. officer. I told the policemen who were here last night the same thing and I told them they were free to search as long as they had a warrant. But they didn't stop to check my word on it and said they would be back this morning." She smiled broadly. "In fact, I rather expected them to come back."

The officer was unmoved. Kathleen went on. "You may as well put those warrants back into your pocket, sir. It's totally unnecessary."

"How's that again?"

The other three officers, the partner for this new patrolman, and the other two from the second car, had joined the fist one on the porch. I realized it had gotten suddenly very quiet in the area of the kitchen, and I could see a few bright eyes peering around the edge of the not-quite-closed door leading to the parlor.

"You're welcome to search," Kathleen continued. "I could stay here and keep the children out of your way - " I heard a soft scrambling of feet as the door swung shut, but I didn't dare look in that direction.

The second officer took a notice out of his pocket. "We also have a notice of return for Miss Christensen here to her home - " He looked in my direction. The other three followed his gaze. I felt like an Easter display in a Macy's window. "Her parents have signed this complaint to charge you with kidnapping and illegal seizure - "

Kathleen laughed. "She's dressed and ready to go with whoever wants to take her. All she needs are her books and her coat."

In less time than it takes to tell, I was in the second patrol car and the two officers were in the front seat. We had to go the long way around because of the conditions of the street and two large sewer covers that were half off their moorings and lying crazily across the pavement.

"Damn," cursed the officer at the wheel as he temporarily lost control. His partner said nothing. We had left the other two men at the center to search with Kathleen's complete co-operation. I was glad I wasn't included in the effort.
