I Write Poetry

So guarded and protected, forever playing it close to the vest,
Unable to give the best of oneself and now content just to rest,

Seeking the security of the shelter of indifference and inaction,
No longer able to feel or even chance another soul's reaction,

No longer willing to open up the old wounds which never seem to heal,
Forever hesitant and now refusing to feel,

Walking alone along short and narrow roads within a safe and guarded place,
A hardened heart which no longer can taste, lost without a trace,

No longer looking for any sign or even willing to listen to the slightest sound,
Content to always hide and never be found,

Left to dream within illusion and memories which ease,
But never quite willing to forgive or to again try and please,

Just two feet now firmly planted on familiar ground,
A soul no longer willing to take a chance, just left with a broken heart which still constantly pounds,

How do you lose all inhibition and finally take the plunge,
Into deep waters where new songs can be sung,

To break down the locked gates and high walls,
Which surround a wounded soul that constantly falls,

How long does the safety of solitude last,
If only one could completely forget one's past, if one only had the renewed courage to ask,

To find that elusive life's key,
A key to living again and setting one's heart and soul free...

Sad but beautiful.
