First of all as an Atheist I do not give a shit that mr sharpio "Gives within his religious community" Part of the VERY reason I support the Welfare state is that the government doesn't ask your religion before helping you out. "private charities" would discriminate and if conservatives fantasy of a welfare state built on "private charity" were to ever occur people ho needed help would have no choice but to PRETEND to be religious in order to gain the help of such people and even worse the fact is there would be so much need they would descend like locust onto the private charity and devour it until it collapsed in on itself. This conservative dream is a batshit fantasy that can never occur in the real world
so as a Liberal I've done FAR more to help the poor by simply voting Democratic than they EVER have by giving to charity.
