I Love Weird Facts

today I went to buy my usual carton of menthol cigarettes..

Found out that menthol cigarettes have been taken off the market.

I asked the reason why to the vendor and he did not know why either.

Not a peep from the government or in the news..

OH and raw tobacco for pipe smokers is now against the law. The vendor showed me rolls of raw tobacco that he cannot sell otherwise both he and the client are fined $1500. He is at a loss now too.

"Our" marvellous himbo Justin Trudeau won..or stole ..maybe the election on the premise of making marijuana legal. Not done yet at all.

U.K.?

They are banning them in Ireland fro 2020

"These findings, combined with the evidence indicating that menthol’s cooling and anesthetic properties can reduce the harshness of cigarette smoke and the evidence indicating that menthol cigarettes are marketed as a smoother alternative to nonmenthol cigarettes, make it likely that menthol cigarettes pose a public health risk above that seen with nonmenthol cigarettes."

@voyelle: the effects of smoking are devastating

Governments have waged war on cigarettes

Maybe there is info in news articles or government websites

Peace

You mean personal choice... fair enough
But with rights there are also responsibilities

The exchequer needs to pic up the tab
Hence the very high taxation
1 in 2 smokers will die form SRi
The cost is humongous in terms of suffering and health and social costs

That's the realm of governments
The main aim is to stop smokers being recruited...
We have loads of legislation for public safety... car safety belts, speed limits, public infection policies in healthcare etc
Laws for children etc

Ireland was the first country to ban smoking in public as the health hazard for individuals due to second hand smoking also fell under the health and safety at work act etc

Smoking has steadily declined in Ireland and both smokers, potential smokers and second hand smokers lives have been saved

@voyelle: I'm aware of the figures and the high taxes

Cigarette taxes do not pay for the "whole" health system
I think what you mean is they pay for the smokers illness

But for example smokers are 1.6x more likely to have back pain and back pain costs are not factored in nor the related second hand smoking effects etc

"...In adults, second-hand smoke causes serious cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, including coronary heart disease and lung cancer. In infants, it causes sudden death. In pregnant women, it causes low birth weight. Almost half of children regularly breathe air polluted by tobacco smoke in public places." WHO

Indirect costs etc and if you read what I said above "The cost is humongous in terms of suffering and health and social costs

The cost is not just monetary

If the governments were happy to accept the tax base long term why would they bother trying to reduce cigarette smoking if revenue was all they were interested in

Not sure what that actually means
Being Irish and smoking?

I assure you, if that's your question, the sense of humour is still here

But we can't continue to smoke to keep you entertained

Peace
