I Am British

Trying to compile all the ways my Britishness expresses itself.

Tea.
I honestly don't mind queuing.
I'd only ever swear at my best friends.
I know my national football team (this applies frankly to any of England, Wales, Scotland, or Northern Ireland) is never going to win the world /european cup. If we ever qualify, I will forget this until we are knocked out.#
Feeling guilty for winning something.
If you serve me awful food, I'll say it was lovely to avoid a scene.
If I don't know what to talk about, I WILL talk about the weather.
If you mispronounce 'scone', I will judge you.
Things can be measured compared to the height of Nelson's Column or Big Ben, and the length of a London bus or football pitch; large land areas may be compared to multiples of Wales.
Having tea from a flask on the beach in the middle of a gale, huddled against a windbreak or sand dune, because we WILL go to the seaside dammit.

I can only apologise for conforming to stereotype...

Love the idea of tea from a flask in a gale brilliant and expecting everyone to be aware of the etiquette around queuing too x

How many Wales fill England?
It is Scone as in stone and fresh cream and strawberry jam of course.
And you are not truly British without having a full English breakfast including Black Pudding.
Yulianna22-25, F
@TheSirfurryanimalWales 馃 i thought you said black pudding was Irish?
Yulianna22-25, F
@littlemissdani 馃just like full English breakfast...
TheSirfurryanimalWales61-69, M
@Yulianna did I?Don鈥檛 remember.
Just checked...Britain and Ireland both claim it.
KiwiBird36-40, F
Britain has Beaches? I did not know this. Pebble strewn shores maybe.
TheSirfurryanimalWales61-69, M
@Yulianna not been there this year
Yulianna22-25, F
@TheSirfurryanimalWales sticking with Dolly?
sunriseloverM
@KiwiBird Britain has more to offer than the gravel seediness of Brighton.

Try the beaches of Norfolk.

ah but ... when YOU say 'scone' does it rhyme with "gone" or with "phone" ??

.... and which merits your severest judgement??

Just idle curiosity xx
Yulianna22-25, F
@KiwiBird 馃 can you have skon, skown, skoon, whatever, with marmalade?

asking for a lost bear...
jackieash26-30
@EnglishLitLover Scone as in "gone"
sunriseloverM
@EnglishLitLover ass as in glass, brass, and mass.

Never apologise to being a british sterotype. I am british as well and i love our uniqueness and how the rest of the world sterotype us. Although tbh the only thing i dont do in your list is drink tea 馃槺. However i always ask the taxi driver have you been busy tonight lol
sunriseloverM
@Chattermanuk and a barber no longer asks : do you want anything for the weekend.
sunriseloverM
You have forgotten:
Avoiding the potholes in the roads
Giving or receiving from food banks.
Walking through boarded up shopping centres.
Empty pubs that close at nine.
Sitting in cocktail bars from mid-afternoon , at 拢9.50 a go.
Drinking in coffee shops where everyone is on the phone
And must get another ugly tattoo.

Does anyone drink tea anymore?
Royrogers61-69, M
@sunriselover I certainly drink tea
Yulianna22-25, F
馃 what, please, is "scone"?
Yulianna22-25, F
@KiwiBird don't you talk about my bottom! 馃

Wonderful! And frankly (with a few obvious exceptions) a list that could apply to most Swedes as well.

A mini-British tutorial.
Hayleywg46-50, F
But so true!
MrAverage196561-69, M
Don't we all
TeresaRudolph7151-55, F
Thanks for sharing this list. This is interesting, and it made me chuckle. There are a few other things that I wonder about, regarding the British, but this probably wouldn't be the place to ask.
@TeresaRudolph71 why not? Lol
maydayM
@littlemissdani wish we could still chat here but we are blocked until you turn 18, me thinketh 馃槅
maydayM
All of that is so hilarious (especially the last sentence) and so uniquely British! "Hail, Britannia!..." you know the rest. lol
@mayday I also know the first word ;)
