I know when something wrong pops into my head that it would be inappropriate to say it, but the comedy value just forces my hand.

Haha - but it is a good way to see what sort of reaction you get! And sometimes it can break through the barriers and get people on side. All the political correctness in the workplace can sometimes get in the way.
