I Am Trying to Develop Good Habits

Here is why you need to learn to be organized and clutter free now while you are still young:

Because it is soooo much harder to learn when you are old.

I have had to give away 80% of everything I owned and learn to live in one room after moving out of my apartment home of 28 years. I am having a hard time learning to de-clutter and sort out and decide what can be kept.

Good habits are so much easier to learn when you're young. It's also tough to climb those stepladders and to get down onto the floor and lift boxes.

I have no choice now. I had to take everything out of storage and get rid of most of it. It can free you up to do this. But it is really tough.

There is a lot more memorabilia, too, when you are older; you've got all those boxes full of stuff your parents left you as well as a lifetime accumulation of your own stuff.

If you had a painful childhood, as I did, it's especially hard to go through all that stuff. The memories are not good. Just looking at an old photo, or reading a letter that lets you know more about a bad situation, can drain your energy for a day. Often, you are reminded of things you'd worked hard to forget.

I am on the last boxes now; actually, only one big one. I hope to finish this by next week. It seems to have taken forever.

It took working about 4-5 days a week for 8 months to get to where I am now. It feels unending as I start yet another day of this tiring misery.

I've been in my house about 20 years and the thought of having to go through everything and keep very little is overwhelming. Big hugs.

There are a few great book by Gretchen Rubin. One is Better than Before, the other The Happiness Project. They reflect her own experience with changing habits, including dealing with clutter, backed up with a lot of research.

She's written a handful of popular books, and openly shares how she has made her own life run "better than before".
