I Am Currently Reading This Book

I am absolutely loving this book.

It's a Civil War story, but not so much about the war as it is about the hardships the war put everyone through. The writing style is just descriptive enough to put you right into the scene, shivering along with the character, lost in a blue wilderness...but not so descriptive that you get bored and want to get to the point.

It's a love story, a survival story, and a story about a man's journey home through innumerable obstacles. There are so many colorful characters he meets along the way- somewhat Oddessey-style.

My favorite of these characters is probably The Goat Woman; an old crone who lives in a gypsy wagon with the goats she has bred throughout decades. Her little wagon is filled with her own nature illustrations, colored in on rough paper with clothing dye she obtains from nearby forest flowers, and her handwritten tales about the daily goings-on of her beloved goats. There are bundles of herbs dripping from the eaves of her wagon, and she mixes her own medicine and salves from these. Just a woman alone, carving a life from the lush green forest that surrounds her.

This book was made into a movie, and it was a great movie, but nothing compares to the immersive beauty of the book. Highly recommend.

I couldn’t get into it but you’re not the first person to tell me how much you liked it. Maybe I need to give it another try!
