I guess it's filtering comments. We can get rid of the ones we don't like and control the direction the thread goes.

Yes exactly. That way the threads are one sided. If you don't like something get rid of it. Like if you are at work and your boss gives you paperwork just throw it out. If you can't see it, it does not exist.
