This particular activity can be rather dangerous. There are times when the person you're watching makes eye contact with you, and the eye contact continues for an uncomfortable length of time. The only thing left to do is break yourself away from their gaze and bail out as quickly as you can. It's not easy accepting defeat, but it's certainly easier than thrusting yourself any further into an awkward situation.
