Why should I care?

After simplifying it, the only answer I ever get when I ask people is, "Because I do."

Caring makes a lot more of a difference than apathy. Caring is what tethers us to each other, to our hobbies and interests, and to this world. Caring is what creates change. Maybe not immediately, but over time it will. Caring also makes the difference in the lives of people that don't see the purpose of doing what they're doing. It's difficult to qualify, but there's a distinct difference in knowing you're cared about and not being cared about. It energizes people. It gives them the motivation to face obstacles and not get beat down by the otherwise crushing indifference of life. You should care because what would be the point of anything if you didn't?

Firstly obviously, you care about these things right?
I've read the Illiad and as far as I can tell people haven't changed much. The roman and greek myths are the same deal.
"God is a comedian and we are all treated as hecklers." For me happiness is created by getting in on the joke. And it is a lot easier than actually giving a shit.

@Alison: What do you mean by 'these things'?

People will always have their good traits and bad traits. We're not perfect. But to say things haven't changed much is ignoring a lot of progress. Between literacy and education, health and medicine, science and technology, poverty and quality of life, everything has gotten better. We are more accepting as a planet than we were 100 years ago. We have more rights and freedoms and protections than our ancestors. I know it's easy to focus on the acts of violence and cruelty and say that we're still a bunch of unsophisticated apes, but the truth is that those instances are a lot rarer than they were back in Homer's days. That isn't to say we don't have a long way to go, but things have definitely changed. And they changed because people cared.

God is a concept. I don't live my life by it. And yeah, not caring is a lot easier than caring. But the easy way is unfulfilling. Hedonism is meaningless. You're just a machine that runs on pleasure at that point. There's no purpose to having depth or understanding or to do something enriching if all you care about is your own happiness. It's just living in Brave New World at that point

@HalfCactus: Exactly.

Stop caring, problem solved.
ButterFly2023 · 18-21, M
LOL. I'm tempted to put that on my FB page. It would be bit too accurate though.
Simplegirlstory · 31-35, F
Ya you can.
ButterFly2023 · 18-21, M
LOL I'm considering it.

Caring is a trait that evolution preferred for individual and collective benefit and existence of our species.
ButterFly2023 · 18-21, M
I'm not really sure our species survival is a good argument, besides it's kind of selfish really.
SW-User
It's totally selfish and that's the sole aim of humanity and live, nothing fancy.

In my opinion, it is like the scorpion and the frog, it will either be in your nature to or not to.
ButterFly2023 · 18-21, M
I worked really hard at living an absurdist lifestyle actually. Now I wonder why I bothered.
Karmalives · 51-55, M
Try .. because I dont.
